The Hanzehogeschool Groningen in the north of the Netherlands is the largest institution of the Hoger beroepsonderwijs (the higher vocational instruction / vocational training) and corresponds roughly to a technical college. The Hanzehogeschool Groningen , also known as “Hanze” for short, was founded in 1986 from the merger of various predecessor institutions and has been steadily expanded since then. Of the more than 25,000 students in 2010, almost 1,700 were of foreign origin.

The educational offer includes 19 faculties with 70 bachelor's degree programs, four programs for professional qualifications, 17 master’s degree programs, courses in Dutch, English and German and courses offered by the internal commercial service provider HanzeConnect. The Hanze is located in the Dutch cities of Groningen (headquarters), Assen , Leeuwarden in the north of the country and the capital Amsterdam .

College motto

The university's motto is in English and is: “Share your talent. Move the world “( Share your talent. Move the world ). According to Hanze, this is intended to express that the students are offered more than just the goal of obtaining a diploma. It is also intended to promote the talent of a student during a degree, who will continue to work after completing the degree. According to this motto, the university is co-sponsor of the regional campaign "City of Talent" ( City of the talents ), which aims to promote Groningen position as a forerunner in the field of research, innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit.

The “Student of the Year” has been elected every year since 2009. The student with the greatest initiative and the best ideas is sought and elected by the codetermination council. In 2009, this title went to the Small Business & Retail Management student Jochem Mossel. In 2010 human technology student Willemijn Tomson received this title. Both were particularly recognized for their innovative product ideas.

history

Groningen is the second oldest university town in the Netherlands and has two large universities: the Reich University of Groningen and the Hanzehogeschool Groningen.

The Hanzehogeschool Groningen was founded in 1986 as a combination of several recognized regional educational institutes. The latest expansion came with the Academy of Minerva, Faculty of Fine Arts, Design and Pop Culture, in 2000. Since this has existed since 1798, the existence of the educational institution is counted from this year on. So it had its 210th anniversary in 2008. In the area of international education, Hanze was the first university in the Netherlands to include an international business school in its offer. This faculty was founded in 1997.

The name "Hanze" originally refers to the merchant term " Hanse ", a medieval association of Hanseatic cities, including from the Netherlands, Germany and England. The aim of the association of Hanseatic cities was to be able to pursue their own commercial interests safely and profitably.

Not least because of its large number of foreign students and international subjects as well as the teaching languages German and English , the Hanze has built up a reputation as an international university of applied sciences over the course of its history. The university also participates in the ERASMUS scholarship program and currently offers its students around 70 partner universities worldwide.

Compared with all technical colleges in the Netherlands, the Hanze achieved second place overall in the student satisfaction category. In the study guide Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs (in German, for example: handbook for choosing a university), the Hanze takes first place in comparison with other part-time courses at universities of applied sciences. In the full-time courses, too, Hanze does best with some programs, including music, electrical engineering, social and legal services and MBRT (in German, for example: medical design and radiotherapeutic techniques). The Keuzegids is published every year on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Education as a book and CD- ROM and contains a comparison of almost 1,300 courses that were rated by consumers.
