history

In 1797 six citizens of Groningen founded the Academy for Drawing, Building and Shipping Studies . In 1798, the first courses took place in a building made available by the city council on Oude Kijk in 't Jatstraat . The painter Gerardus de San (1754-1830) headed the drawing class. The academy was named Academie Minerva in 1857 and moved to the Oude Boteringestraat . The painter Johannes Hinderikus Egenberger (1822–1897) was appointed director. In 1913 the Academie Minerva became a department of the newly established technical school Gemeentelijke inrichtingen voor nijverheidsonderwijs on Petrus Driessenstraat . The architects of the building were Jan Wiebenga (1886–1974) and Leendert van der Vlugt (1894–1936).

The Academie Minerva became independent in 1964 and had several branches in the Groningen city area. Since 1984 the art college has been located in a building designed by the architect Piet Blom (1934–1999) on Gedempte Zuiderdiep .

Some painting students at the Academie Minerva became active in the artists' association De Ploeg (1918) and the fourth generation of the Groep van de figuratieve abstractie , also known as De Groep .
