Otto Eerelman (born March 23, 1839 in Groningen , Friesland , Netherlands ; † October 3, 1923 ibid) was a Dutch painter , engraver and lithographer , who was famous in his time for his depiction of dogs and horses. At the same time he was court painter and known for his portraits of the princess and later Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.

Life

Eerelmann began his art studies at the Academie Minerva in Groningen in 1860. After graduating in 1863, he decided to study another year at the Academy of Fine Arts ( Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten ) in Antwerp , Belgium . In 1865 he spent some time in Lawrence Alma-Tadema's studio . After a short stay in Paris , Eerelmann returned to Groningen to work at the Academie Minerva from 1867. The next stations in life and work were Brussels in 1874 and then The Hague in 1875, where he stayed until 1902. During this time he received regular orders from the royal family. In Het Loo Castle there is an equestrian portrait from his hand showing Queen Wilhelmina.

For health reasons, Eerelman moved to Arnhem before returning to Groningen in 1907. He died there in 1926 when he was over 80 years old. He was buried in the city's southern cemetery. A street in Groningen bears his name. A commissioned work with the title The Horse Awards on the Great Market on August 28th hangs in the town hall . This day is the annual day of remembrance due to the end of the siege of Groningen on August 28, 1672.

Influences

Otto Eerelman is seen as a student of the painter JH Eigenberger . His relationships with Jozef Israëls as well as with the brothers Taco and Hendrik Willem Mesdag were deep. With the two brothers, Eerelman played an important role in the art lovers Genootschap Pictura in Groningen. An influence from the animal portraits by the English painter Edwin Landseer can also be seen.
