Jozef Israëls (born January 27, 1824 in Groningen , † August 12, 1911 in The Hague ) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist . He is one of the most important representatives of the Hague School .

Life

After being taught by Jacob Bruggink , Johan Joeke Gabriël van Wicheren and Cornelis Bernardus Buijs in Groningen, Israëls began apprenticeship with Jan Adam Kruseman and Johan Willem Pieneman in Amsterdam at the age of 18 . With a few interruptions he stayed in Amsterdam until 1871, after which he mainly worked in The Hague.

From 1845 to 1847 he lived in Paris . In the studio of the French François-Édouard Picot he learned to paint romantic historical pictures . Through the acquaintance of the Belgian Louis Gallait and the French Dutchman Ary Scheffer , Israëls also came to romance . During this period he was also influenced by Horace Vernet and Paul Delaroche . During this time he also met Johan Barthold Jongkind and the Barbizon painters .

Back in The Hague, it was his ideas of ordinary people, especially the fishermen from Zandvoort and Katwijk ( South Holland ), that should make him famous.

After moving to The Hague (1871), he was close friends with Hendrik Willem Mesdag . Together they initiated the Hollandse Teekenmaatschappij (the Dutch drawing society) in 1876 and played an important role in The Hague's Pulchri Studio .

Until 1885 he taught his son Isaac Israëls (1865–1934), about whom he wrote: With God's help he will become a better painter than his father . After 1885 Isaac went his own way and became known together with George Hendrik Breitner under the name of Amsterdam Impressionists .

In 1902 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .

In 1905 his well-read book about Rembrandt was published . It has been translated into five languages.
