Willem Hendrik Crouwel (born November 21, 1928 in Groningen ; † September 19, 2019 ) was a Dutch graphic artist , painter , university professor and museum director. He is best known for his poster and catalog designs, his font design and his postage stamp designs . Crouwel lived and worked in Amsterdam and Rotterdam .

Willem Hendrik Crouwel appeared among other things as an artist under the names: Wim Crouwel , Willm Hendrik Crouwel ; Willm Hendrik & Crouwel , Willem Hendrik & Crouwel , Wilm Hendrik & Crouwel or W. H. on.

Crouwel studied from 1947 to 1949 at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. He then completed a degree at the Applied Arts Institute in Amsterdam until 1952 . From 1951 he worked as a freelance graphic artist in Amsterdam.

He was awarded the Werkman Prize of the City of Amsterdam. In 1963 he was one of the five founders of the design agency "Total Design" and in the 1960s he was a member of the International Center for the Typographic Arts (ICTA) . Wim Crouwel has been responsible for many posters, catalogs and exhibitions for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam since 1964 . He also worked for the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven . In 1964 he was invited to documenta III (in the graphics department) in Kassel . Wim Crouwel also gained a great international reputation for his design of the Dutch pavilion at the 1970 World Exhibition in Osaka .

In 1973 he became Professor of Industrial Design at Delft University of Technology . He remained a consultant at Total Design and in 1981 became director of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. In the same year he also took over a professorship for art and cultural studies at the Erasmus University Rotterdam . His work has been awarded numerous national and international prizes. He also designed numerous postage stamps for the Dutch Post. The most famous of these are the number stamps, which were first issued in 1976.
