Johannes Pieter (Jan) Pronk (born March 16, 1940 in Scheveningen ( The Hague )) is a Dutch politician and diplomat . From June 2004 to July 2007 he was the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's special envoy for Sudan .

Scientific career

Pronk 1964. Following his studies in economics at the NEI ( Nederlands Instituut Economische ), an economic institute of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam , from. From 1965 to 1971 he lectured there and at the SSI ( Institute for Social Studies ) in The Hague. He was also a professor at the SSI from 1979 to 1980 and in 1989 took over the Den Uyl Chair at the University of Amsterdam , which was donated by the Wiardi Beckman Foundation .

Pronk was chairman of the Workers' Party Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) in the “ Second Chamber ” of Parliament three times from 1971 to 1973, from 1978 to 1980 and again from 1986 to 1989 . In between, he was Minister for Development Cooperation in the Joop den Uyl government from 1973 to 1977 . He also held this position from 1989 to 1994 in the third cabinet of Ruud Lubbers and in the first government of Wim Kok (1994–1998). In his second reign he received the Office for Housing , Regional Planning and Environment from 1998 to 2002.

United Nations

From 1980 to 1985 Pronk was Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), then until 1986 Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations .

In July 2001 he chaired the 6th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn , where he worked hard to secure an agreement on the Kyoto Protocol , for which he was appointed by the US Business Council for Environmentally Compatible Energy ( US Business Council for Sustainable Energy ) was awarded the Climate e-Award .

In 2002 UN Secretary General Kofi Annan commissioned him as special envoy for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg , where he moderated discussions on the topics of water , hygiene , the environment and biodiversity . In March 2003 Pronk was appointed new chairman of the Council for Cooperation in the Field of Water Supply and Sanitation (WSSCC), and in December of that year he succeeded Richard Jolly at the first WASH Global Forum in Dakar , Senegal .

On June 18, 2004, Kofi Annan appointed him UN special envoy for Sudan .

Pronk was also Treasurer of the Brandt Commission , Minister in the Mansholt Commission (1972–1973) and a member of the editorial board of The International Spectator . Since January 1st, 2008 he has been chairman of the Interkerkelijk Vredesberaad (IKV), a Dutch interchurch peace movement .
