Jo Ritzen (1986)

Jozef Marie Mathias "Jo" Ritzen (born October 3, 1945 in Heerlen ) is a Dutch economist and social democratic politician . From 2003 to February 2011 he was President of Maastricht University .

Live and act

From 1963 Ritzen attended Bernardinus College in Heerlen. In 1970 he received a diploma in physics from the Technical University of Delft (now Delft University of Technology ) . He then did his doctorate at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam with a thesis on the relationship between education , economic growth and income distribution .

Before he got into politics, Ritzen worked at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Catholic University of Nijmegen (now Radboud University Nijmegen ) and at the University of California, Berkeley .

In 1989 he became Minister for Education, Culture and Science under Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers . He continued this office after 1994, when Wim Kok became Prime Minister. Between July and August 1994 he also held the post of Minister of Health under Ruud Lubbers for a short time.

As a minister in 1990, he introduced the OVCard, which enables Dutch students to use public transport for free. In addition, against the initial resistance of student and university organizations, he reformed the financing of studies - a step that is now widely accepted.

After the end of the Kok government in 1998, he became one of the 30 Vice Presidents of the World Bank .

In 2003 he followed a call from Maastricht University . As President, he has set the university's goal of internationalization and innovative teaching and research.
