Helden is a district of the city of Attendorn in the southern Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia with around 1,200 inhabitants. The Repe flows through the village . The founding of Helden goes back to the 11th century.

history

There is a presumption that the name Helden goes back to the fact that the place was built on a dump .

The existence of the place Helden can be traced back to the first half of the 13th century in the Pickert collection of documents. Helden (or Hildene , Heldene and Hylden ) is often used as a designation of origin for people. According to a document from 1230, Theodericus et Heribordus de Hildene appear as witnesses at a hearing. As early as 1187, a Sifrid von Helden (de Eldene) is mentioned as a witness in a matter of Archbishop Phylipp of Cologne (Philipp von Heinsberg, 1167–1191 EB) and the Oelinghausen monastery. The current place name "Helden" contains a document from the year 1256. Accordingly, Theodericus miles dictus de Heldene promises in a document written to Bilstein the Bredelar monastery to pay an annual pension of 3 shillings from his court ( curia ) "zu Helden".

An appraisal register (used to collect taxes) from 1543 gives an indication of the size of the place at that time. A total of 13 taxpayers are named for the "Dorff Hilden", of which 9 had to pay their taxes in gold guilders . It should have been a comparatively wealthy farm or house owner.

The greater part of the municipality of Helden with more than 31 km² was incorporated into the city of Attendorn on July 1, 1969. A smaller part with less than 8 km² came to the district of Olpe at the same time .

The following section contains further information on the early local history.

Attractions

St. Hippolytus hero

The Romanesque church of St. Hippolytus , built in the 11th century, can be seen from afar . The church was built on a rock spur in the middle of the village. The founder of the church is Anno II. , This emerges from a document from Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden from 1253. The building was built from thick rubble stones. On the floor a locally mined marble named was in places Heldener Red , Heldenrot or Repetaler marble laid. This stone was also used outside of the Sauerland, so z. B. in the New Reich Chancellery (walls), the Reich Aviation Ministry (today: Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus , entrance hall and staircase), in the Königsberg Palace (pillars) and in the Berlin City Palace (stairs). There is a crypt under the chancel . In 1935 a Romanesque vault painting and a sepulchral niche with other paintings of great value were discovered in this. They are among the oldest connected Romanesque paintings in Westphalia . Of the interior of the church, the late Gothic cycle of apostles, the baroque pulpit by the Attendorn sculptor Johann Sasse and remnants of the baroque seating are particularly worth seeing .

The cemetery on the south side of the church is very impressive. In the old tradition, the tombs for the deceased are uniformly designed, a visible sign of the statement: "In death all people are equal".

societies

Like many Sauerland towns, Helden has a rich club life. Every year in July, the St. Sebastianus Shooting Brotherhood organizes its shooting festival in its own shooting hall. The parade on Sunday is always worth seeing. The village also has its own drum corps , a men's choir and a music club. The volunteer fire brigade provides fire protection and general help.

The Heldener Natur- und Heimatfreunde take care of the local issues. In 2007, the association applied for a village development plan to be drawn up by the city administration , which finally took place in 2010. Helden also has an artificial turf soccer field and tennis facility, which are used by the local sports clubs.

Educational institutions

Helden has its own kindergarten run by a parents' association . There is also a primary school on site : the municipal Catholic Mariengrundschule Helden.

economy

The place is more agricultural and touristy. In addition to a restaurant, there are several guest houses and holiday apartments, as well as two full-time farms . Helden also owns a small grocery store, two bank branches, a gas station and a few small processing companies. The proximity to the city of Attendorn offers additional employment opportunities for the residents due to the existing industry.

Current

After the publication of the village development plan, the working group for village development parish Helden was founded. Currently there are two working groups, social and media, in which committed residents work on social and cultural projects. The first result of these efforts is the recently launched homepage for the Obere Repetal.

Aerial view of heroes

In April 2011 it became known that the RWE subsidiary Amprion wanted to build a new 380 kV high-voltage line close to the residential area in Helden. The new masts should have a height of up to 65 meters.
