Ennest is a district of the town of Attendorn in the Olpe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) and has 2222 inhabitants.

Ennest is located north of the core town of Attendorn. The Milstenau , a tributary of the Bigge , flows north and east of the village.

history

The place name can be traced back to the 12th century. Examples are: 1175: in uilla que dicitur Ennest , 1214: Bernardus de Endest , 1289: Herbordo de Ennest u. a. According to a more recent study of the place names in the Olpe district, “Ennest” is based on the Indo-European root “en- / on-”, which was extended by the suffix (dependent word formation element) “-st-”. This combination with “-st” can be found in old names of waters and suggests a name interpretation as “flowing, flowing water”.

Politically belonged to Ennest Office Waldenburg and Gogericht and parish Attendorn to peasantry Ennest. An appraisal register (used to collect taxes) from 1543 gives an indication of the size of the place at that time. A total of 15 taxpayers are named for the Ennest building ; this number should have agreed with the farms and houses existing at the time. The highest taxes of 2 gold florins and more were due to Gerd Roelffs, Rutger zu Ennest and Rutger zu Finnentrop .

In the 17th century there were 14 farms in Ennest: "Siepen Gut, Kollen Gut, Rademacher's Gut, Suren Gut, Herden Gut, Hoffnagels Gut, Halbfaß Gut, Timmermanns Gut, Raulefs Gut, Korten Gut, Bankstahlen Gut, Fischers Gut, Schulten Gut and Schnüttgens Gut ”.

From 1819 Ennest belonged to the Attendorn municipality in the Attendorn-Land community . In 1895 there were 52 buildings and 320 residents in the village. School teacher Kaiser, inn Johann Vogt. In 1936 there were 76 houses with 92 households and 500 inhabitants in Ennest. The farmer Josef Siepe was a member of the municipal council of Attendorn-Land. The last mayor of the rural community was Ennester Josef Luke (1908-1994) from 1956 until the municipal reorganization in 1969. After that, when the community was incorporated into the city of Attendorn, he was deputy mayor of the city of Attendorn until 1975 and was awarded the city's ring of honor.

The symphonic wind orchestra of the music train of the volunteer fire brigade Ennest from 1948 is the largest of its kind in Germany. It consists of both wood and brass . A number of CDs were recorded.
