In 1317 the place was first mentioned as Rylinchusen . In 1365 the name Rifelinchusen is also found .

For centuries, Rieflinghausen belonged to the parish of Helden and in the 20th century to the municipality of Helden, which was partially incorporated into the town of Attendorn as part of the municipal reorganization.
