Niederhelden is a village and part of the city of Attendorn in the Olpe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

In mid-2017 Niederhelden had 315 inhabitants. The place is 287 m above sea level. NN on the river Repe and is located at the southwest end of the Elsper Mulde, the southeast part of the Attendorn-Elsper double trough .

Early history

The existence of Niederhelden can be traced back to the middle of the 14th century in Pickert's collection of documents. Herbolt v. According to a document from 1352, Helden transferred two farms to Tillmänneken in the Winkel, citizens of Attendorn, because they were archbishop's fiefdoms. One farm is in "Niederhelden" ( Nydern Heldene ) and the tenant is called Tile. Another early piece of news relates to the year 1371, in which Franco de Helden was enfeoffed with the main courtyard in Niederhelden vurme Hagen.

An appraisal register (used to collect taxes) from 1543 gives an indication of the size of the place at that time. A total of 16 taxpayers are named for the "Dorff Niedernhilden", of which 13 had to pay their taxes in gold guilders. It should have been a comparatively wealthy farm or house owner.

Site and sights

The Sankt Sebastianus Chapel is located in the upper village and was first mentioned in a document in 1554. The statue of Sebastianus , which still exists today, seems to have been in the chapel as early as 1674 . As early as 1939 it was planned to replace the dilapidated old chapel with a new building. The plans became obsolete after World War II. But soon after the end of the war, on March 14, 1946, the foundation stone was laid for the new building and on August 15, 1947, on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary , the Niederhelden people celebrated the inauguration. The new building is a single-nave hall with a steep roof and an octagonal roof turret. The structure of the interior directs the gaze to the altar cross.

The townscape is also characterized by five centuries-old half-timbered courtyards and other half-timbered buildings that tie in with this traditional construction method. Above the village stands the Holy House , which with a memorial stone reminds of the Heidenstraße between Leipzig and Cologne , which ran through Niederhelden and was an important military and trade route in the Middle Ages.

In the center of the village there is a park directly on the Repe with a playground, soccer field, many bridges and benches to linger. The many hundred meters of hedges are also characteristic. The townscape and the functioning village community ensured that Niederhelden was allowed to use the title “Silver Village ” at state level in 1985, 1987 and 1989 in the competition “Our village should be more beautiful” . In 1991 the place even became a gold village at the state level. In 2007 a further silver plaque was added at the state level. On September 13, 2009, a large Niederhelden delegation at the Düsseldorf farmers' market in Ostinghausen ( Bad Sassendorf ) had reason to celebrate again after 18 years. NRW Agriculture Minister Eckhard Uhlenberg once again awarded the commitment of the Niederheldener and the village image the title “Golddorf”. In September 2010 it was announced that Niederhelden will become Bundesgolddorf 2010.

economy

The main source of income is gastronomy, characterized by two four-star hotels and numerous guest houses with a total of around 300 beds. In a far-reaching process, it replaced agricultural acquisition. The 10 local companies offer a total of 120 jobs.

Village community

The village community still maintains ancient traditions today, which include New Year's singing, Epiphany singing, sausage singing and the sausage ball at Carnival, the clatter and the Easter fire at Easter, the unofficial village rifle festival, the chapel festival, and the monthly men's and women's regulars' table.

A few years ago the village community set up the “Nature in the Village Path”, on which several stations provide information about ecological and biospheric aspects. For more than a hundred years, the independent water extraction and supply, which is operated by two different interest groups (Oberdorf and Unterdorf), has proven to be particularly advantageous for the village population. The south-east bordering Bilsteiner Bergland offers abundant water sources that do not dry out even in summer and therefore guarantee a comprehensive and continuous water supply.
