Joseph Bautz

Joseph Bautz (also Josef ; born November 20, 1843 in Keeken near Kleve , † March 19, 1917 in Münster ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and theologian .

Life

After graduating from the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck , Bautz studied philosophy and theology from 1863 to 1867 at the Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy in Münster , including dogmatics and apologetics with Anton Berlage . On December 20, 1867, Bautz was ordained a priest . After promotion to lic. theol. in 1874 he worked as prefect of studies at the Collegium Ludgerianum in Münster until his habilitation in 1877 . He then held lectures as a private lecturer at the theological faculty in Münster and was appointed extraordinary professor of dogmatics and apologetics in 1892, succeeding his teacher Berlage. In the same year he received his doctorate his faculty to Dr. theol. hc Bautz taught at the University of Münster for 36 years. Since he mainly dealt with eschatology , he was popularly nicknamed "Höllen-Bautz". He died on March 19, 1917 in Munster; his grave can be found in the local central cemetery.
