Anton Berlage (born December 21, 1805 in Münster ; † December 6, 1881 ibid) was a Catholic theologian specializing in dogmatics .

Live and act

After graduating from high school, Berlage first studied theology and philosophy with Wilhelm Esser in his hometown of Münster. In 1826 he went to Georg Hermes to study at the University of Bonn . Both Esser and Hermes initially influenced Berlage towards Hermesianism . The following years of study in Tübingen, especially the years 1829 and 1830, were decisive for his scientific development as a Catholic dogmatist. Johann Sebastian von Drey and Johann Adam Möhler introduced him to Catholic dogmatics here. In 1830 he went to Joseph Görres and Franz von Baader in Munich to prepare for his doctorate. In 1831 he received his doctorate in theology. In 1831 he was admitted to the theological faculty in Münster as a private lecturer. Here he gave lectures on apologetics, the history of dogma and symbolism. He was ordained a priest on March 17, 1832. In 1835 he was appointed professor of theology in Münster. In the years 1849/50, 1855/56 and 1865/66 Berlage was rector of the University of Münster. 1832 was Berlage by Pope Gregory XVI. appointed house prelate.

Berlage held a prominent position among the Catholic dogmatists of the 19th century. His main work, the "Catholic Dogmatics", appeared from 1839 to 1864 in seven volumes in Münster. In this work he represented the point of view of the history-oriented Catholic School of Tübingen . To lay the foundations for dogmatics, Berlage first wrote the work “Apologetics of the Church or Justification of the Truth and Divinity of Christianity in its Propagation and Development” (Münster 1834). Especially in the first volume of Dogmatics, Berlage turned against his former teacher Georg Hermes and the system of Hermesianism he represented. Berlage planned a second edition of Catholic Dogmatics , in which he wanted to go deeper into the relationship between belief and knowledge as well as philosophy and theology. This second edition did not take place.
