Wilhelm Esser (philosopher)

Wilhelm Esser (born February 21, 1798 in Düren ; † October 6, 1854 there ) was a German philosopher and university professor .

Life

Esser initially received private tuition for four years and then went to high school in Düren . In 1814 he moved to Cologne . There he completed theological, philosophical and philological studies, which he continued from 1816 to its closure in 1818 at the University of Münster . He rejected a reputation as a teacher at the Lyceum Hosianum by Braunsberg off to his academic teacher Georg Hermes to the newly founded University of Bonn to follow and continue his studies with him. He also studied classical philology with Karl Friedrich Heinrich and August Ferdinand Naeke . In Bonn, he was in 1821 with the dissertation De prima et altera pars quae fertur Nubium Aristophanis Editione ad Elvenichium dissertatio to Dr. phil. PhD . In the same year he completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn and then taught as a private lecturer in philosophy.

In 1823 Esser accepted an appointment as an associate professor of philosophy at the Academy in Münster , where in 1826 he was promoted to full professor of philosophy and philology. He was also the second director of the academy's philological seminar.

Esser died in 1854 while on vacation in his hometown.
