Bernd Moeller (church historian)

Bernd Moeller (born May 19, 1931 in Berlin ; † October 28, 2020 ) was a German Protestant church historian with a focus on the late Middle Ages and the Reformation period .

Bernd Moeller studied Protestant theology and history. In 1956 he received his doctorate at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Mainz with the thesis The Contestation with Johann Tauler . The habilitation followed two years later on Johannes Zwick and the Reformation in Konstanz at the University of Heidelberg . In 1964 he was appointed to the chair for church history with a focus on the history of the Reformation at the University of Göttingen as the successor to Ernst Wolf and taught there until his retirement in 1999. His successor was Thomas Kaufmann .

In addition to Ekkehard Mühlenberg for the old church , Moeller taught general church history of the Reformation and modern times; he was a specialist in the history of urbanism in the late Middle Ages and the Reformation. From 1976 to 1991 he was chairman of the Association for the History of the Reformation . Moeller wrote or was involved in around 40 monographs. His history of Christianity in the main has seen ten editions so far. The Ecumenical Church History , which has been published with Raymund Kottje since 1970, is of particular importance and , when it was first published, showed a new kind of church-historical perspective. Moeller contributed to the German Biographical Encyclopedia by Walther Killy and Rudolf Vierhaus .

In 1998 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich . Since 1976 he has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and since 1995 of the Academia Europaea .
