life and work

Sasse was married to a Margarete Zappenfeld. Among other things, the son Peter emerged from the marriage. A daughter was born during the family's stay to redesign the monastery church in Corvey.

Johann Sasse was the owner of a well-known sculpture workshop in Attendorn. Their works can be found mainly in the western and central Sauerland . Sasse is one of the leading carving artists in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He and his workshop created individual sacred furnishings such as altars, figures, organ brochures , but also complete church furnishings .

In 1670 he began work on a second high altar and the choir stalls of the Franciscan Church in Fritzlar . Between 1671 and 1673 he created the high altar of the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist in Attendorn . This work was probably destroyed by fire in 1783. In the same church he or his workshop created the Marian altar, the choir stalls, a pulpit, other side altars and figures. In 1697 he created an altar of Our Lady there to commemorate the provost Wilhelm von Fürstenberg . He also designed the Baroque interior of the Corvey Abbey . From 1674 he created the large high altar, the side altars and the choir stalls based on designs by Johann Georg Rudolphi . The contract with the monastery provided for a payment of 1,500 thalers. One condition was that he was not allowed to accept any other work during this time. The pulpits of St. Petri in Soest (1692/93) and the church in Mellrich also come from him . He also worked on the interior of Schnellenberg Castle . For this he created carved door walls and wall coverings. Works in the churches in Wormbach and Hemer , in Adolfsburg , in Paderborn , Lenhausen and in the Fehrenbracht chapel are also attributed to him or his workshop . In the hospital church in Attendorn there is a Vesper picture created by Sasse. This was also donated by him and his wife Margarete in 1683. The design of the organ built by Peter Hendrich Varenholt from Bielefeld in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Kirchhundem from around 1701/02 also comes from Sasse.

successor

His son Peter Sasse took over the workshop and also created some sacred works of art. His main work is the equipment of the pilgrimage church on the Kohlhagen . He also created the altars for Emlinghausen and for the Waldenburg pilgrimage chapel . He also worked for the churches in Wenden and Bödefeld.

With many works it is not clear whether they were carried out by one of the two masters or by employees. Often the works of the masters that were started were also completed by journeymen. For some works, the assignment to Johann Sasse or his workshop is not clear. This applies to the churches in Friesenhagen , Elspe and Drolshagen .
