history

The institute was founded in 1987 by the economics faculties of the Erasmus University Rotterdam , the University of Amsterdam and the Free University of Amsterdam with the aim of creating the right environment for writing a dissertation in the broad fields of economics, econometrics or finance. In the 1990s, the institute improved its research skills and became an international meeting place for economists and economists. This development was taken into account in 1993 with the founding of the TI Alumni Association, the purpose of which is to maintain long-term contact between former research staff at the Tinbergen Institute. This currently includes over 450 alumni.

education

The Tinbergen Institute offers a Masters in Research ( M.Phil. ) With two profiles: one in Economics and one in Econometrics , both of which consist of two years of intensive instruction. The research master's is usually followed by three years of research in preparation for a dissertation for which a Ph.D. is awarded.

research

The research area includes four programs:

  • Institutions and decision analysis ;
  • Financial markets and international markets ;
  • Work, region and the environment ;
  • Econometrics .

Ranking

Because it brings together researchers in econometrics, econometrics and public finance from three Dutch universities, the Tinbergen Institute is not ranked separately from these three participating universities. However, if it were ranked on the basis of the publications of its fellows (professors), it would inevitably be rated as one of the best research institutes in Europe and among the top 20 research institutes worldwide.

In the ranking of the 200 best economics faculties worldwide by Kalaitzidakis et al. (2003), based on research articles in the 30 leading economics journals, the Tinbergen Institute would be in 15th place worldwide and 1st place with an aggregate value of EUR, UvA and VU landed in Europe.
