The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam , abbreviated VU ; Latin Universitas Libera (Reformata Amstelodamensis) , German about: "Free University of Amsterdam", was founded on October 20, 1880 in Amsterdam by Orthodox Protestants under the leadership of Abraham Kuyper (the then head of the Anti-Revolutionary Party ) with the intention of a To create a university that is free from influence by state and church and is bound only to the word of God. The word “free” in the name has a different meaning than the “free” in the name of the Free University of Berlin . The Vrije-Universiteit Amsterdam is one of two universities in Amsterdam , along with the Universiteit van Amsterdam.
Religious orientation
Until the 1970s, the university was closely linked to the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands , but over the years it acquired a more general Christian character. The bond with Christianity is also indicated in the university's motto, gewoon bijzonder (“simply special”). It is a “simple” (normal) university where research and teaching are carried out, but also a “special” one due to its strong focus on society and life. As a result, among other things, the university has a relatively high proportion of Muslim students, for whom a separate prayer room has also been set up. In addition, VU offered the first imam training in the Netherlands. Because of the high proportion of foreigners, the university gained the reputation of being a haven for “ diversity ”.
