Gerrit Zalm

Gerrit Zalm (born May 6, 1952 in Enkhuizen ) is a Dutch politician of the liberal Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD). With brief interruptions in 1996 and 2002/03, he was Minister of Finance of the Netherlands from 1994 to 2007 .

Zalm successfully completed his economics studies in Amsterdam in 1975 to begin a career in the Ministry of Finance . He was soon an influential head of department and since 1990 professor at the Free University of Amsterdam . In 1994, Zalm was appointed finance minister for the first time. He remained so until the election of the first brief government Balkenende , to which he did not belong; instead he became the leader of the VVD parliamentary group in the Dutch lower house. But already in the second Balkenende government (2003–2006), Zalm was supposed to be a member of finance minister again, and during this time he also held the post of Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands. At the beginning of July 2006, he was also the managing minister in charge of the economic department for eight days.

After the Dutch parliamentary elections in 2006 , Zalm declared at the end of November 2006 that he would only be available as minister until the election of the new government and that he would then end his career as an active politician. Zalm has been a consultant to Permira since September 2007 .

After taking over the Dutch division of Fortis Bank Nederland (Holding) NV, Gerrit Zalm became manager of Fortis Bank Nederland and ABN AMRO Nederland on November 21, 2008 . He is president of the transition team that will bring ABN AMRO Nederland and Fortis Bank Nederland together.

In the course of the formation of the government after the parliamentary elections in 2017 , Zalm was appointed as an informateur on June 28, 2017 .
