Terrorama! is the title of the first feature film by Dutch director Edwin Brienen from 2001.

action

Terrorama! tells the story of six people in search of individual freedom, detached from all values, from good and bad. They try to achieve this freedom through a terrorist act: the kidnapping of Gerard van Dongen, a well-known television presenter. During an improvised TV show, the terrorists confront van Dongen with their darkest thoughts and feelings.

criticism

“There is a lot of pseudo-existentialist gossip about what love and what freedom is in monologues. To do this, you stand around cool or take other poses, as if this were an early Fassbinder film . You can guess what this film is going to lead to, but the whole thing gives the impression that Brienen, who is apparently well-known in his home country, has tried almost desperately to shock with drugs, sex and violence. "( Der Tagesspiegel , 22. May 2003 - Sex, Cigarettes and Video)

“With his film, Brienen questions pretty much all social norms (and good taste), but over the concentrated trash his main question almost gets a little out of sight: the stirring and touching search for happiness of a cool, fucked-up terrorist gang who has a well-known TV host kidnapped and murdered, only to feel emptiness afterwards as before. Instead of satisfaction or confirmation, a single great nothing pulsates in them. The title allusion to Bret Easton Ellis ' novel "Glamorama" is therefore as strategic as it is clever. "( Tip (magazine) , May 22nd - June 4th, 2003)

controversy

  • Brienen was not allowed to show the film at the Dutch film festival. For the first time in the history of the festival a film was refused. The main reason was the extreme sexually violent undertones of the film.
  • Leading actress Kiki Classen was the object of a hate campaign by the Dutch gossip "Weekend", which led its readers to believe that Classen was making a pornographic film.
  • Brienen's friend and colleague Theo van Gogh plays a confused man in the film who preaches from the Koran to a loving couple . Four years after these recordings, van Gogh was murdered by the fundamentalist Islamist Mohammed Bouyeri in Amsterdam.
  • The British film label Salvation Film Group has wanted an English version of Terrorama! publish, but is hindered by the film censorship of the British Board of Film Classification . The focus is on a pornographic scene with a masturbating figure of Christ and some outbreaks of violence at the end of the film.
  • After the murder of Theo van Gogh, Scotland Yard seized the film in 2005 because it was assumed that Muslims might feel attacked if the film was released. The film has not yet appeared in England.

background

  • The readers of the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant voted Terrorama one of the best films of 2001.

Awards

Terrorama! was named Best Film at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival in 2002. Esther Eva Verkaaik was named Best Actress at the Toronto Independent Film Festival that same year .
