Mohammed Bouyeri
Mohammed Bouyeri ( Arabic محمد بويري) (Born March 8, 1978 in Amsterdam ) is a Moroccan - Dutch Islamist who ambushed the Dutch artist, filmmaker and Islamic critic Theo van Gogh on November 2, 2004 and murdered him. This murder made headlines across Europe. In 2005 Bouyeri was sentenced to life imprisonment for his act .
Life
Bouyeri has both Moroccan and Dutch citizenship . His parents are first generation immigrants . In 1995 Bouyeri completed his HAVO degree and then attended the “INHOLLAND” university in Diemen . He changed subjects several times, left the university after five years without a degree and increasingly turned to Islamic fundamentalism . He had previously become known to the police as a member of a group of Moroccan youths under surveillance. It is believed that he joined an Islamist terrorist group known as the Hofstadgroep ( Hofstad Group ).

After the public controversy surrounding Theo van Gogh's Islam-critical short film Submission - Part One , Bouyeri shot the director on the street on November 2, 2004 , cut his throat and stuck a knife into his body, which included a letter of confession Death threats against the then Dutch MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali , was attached. Hirsi Ali was friends with Van Gogh and wrote the above film. After an exchange of fire with the police, Bouyeri was arrested injured near the crime scene.
On July 11, 2005, the trial in Amsterdam began in which he was charged with the murder of Theo van Gogh, attempted murder of police officers, attempted manslaughter of passers-by, violation of the gun law and membership in a terrorist organization. Bouyeri, who appeared in court with the Koran under his arm, confessed to having killed Van Gogh, waived a defense and instead stated that he wanted to commit further attacks. On July 26, 2005, Bouyeri was sentenced to life imprisonment. Under Dutch law, early release from life imprisonment is only possible through a pardon from the king.
In the context of the trial of Bouyeri's alleged accomplice, the Hofstad group, the 27-year-old Dutchman of Moroccan origin tried to argue that violence was allowed by the Prophet Mohammed "in the fight of believers against unbelievers".
