Schlag den Star ( SdS for short ) is a game show on ProSieben that is produced by Raab TV and Brainpool . As a variant of the Saturday evening show Schlag den Raab , a candidate (seasons 1 to 5) or a celebrity (since season 6) appears in up to nine (seasons 1 to 7 and season 10) or fifteen or (if there is a tie) sixteen (season 8 , 9 and since season 10) in different disciplines against a prominent opponent.
background
After the great success of Schlag den Raab , the producers sold the idea to foreign television stations. Without Stefan Raab and with less airtime, the concept of the show was changed. It was produced abroad under the name Beat the Star ; Opponents of the candidates were changing celebrities. The German producers re-imported the new principle for ProSieben. The principle was later changed so that two celebrities compete against each other in each issue.
Gameplay
Seasons 1 to 5
The gameplay was essentially the same as in Schlag den Raab . Instead of Stefan Raab, a celebrity faced the candidate who fought for 50,000 euros in each episode in the first five seasons. In the 16th show, Lars Niedereichholz and Ande Werner von Mundstuhl were two celebrities who took turns from game to game. As with the original, the money went into the jackpot if the respective star won against the candidate. In contrast to the longer Saturday evening show, the candidate was not selected by the audience from five applicants via televoting , but selected in advance by the editorial team and presented with a short film at the beginning of the broadcast.
The number of games was limited to a maximum of nine disciplines, most of which were taken from previous editions of the original. Many elaborate games outside the studio (especially those where the venue was not within walking distance) were missing, as was the two to four musical performances. In contrast to Schlag den Raab , the broadcast was pre-recorded and the broadcast time was limited to around two hours. The show ended as soon as one of the opponents could no longer be defeated by his opponent, i.e. when one of the two had reached at least 23 out of a possible 45 points. This was possible in the seventh game at the earliest.
In contrast to Schlag den Raab , Schlag den Star could come to the situation that it was already clear before a game that it would have no influence on the overall victory: If it was 14:14 after the seventh game, the winner of the ninth game won the evening completely regardless of who won the eighth game. This situation occurred once in the issue with Joey Kelly , in which it was already clear before the game "Remember notes" that it could not influence the outcome of the show. In addition, the seventh game was of no importance if it was 15: 6 after the sixth game, since game 8 or game 9 was enough for the leading opponent to win, but game 7 was useless. This situation existed in the issues with Tim Lobinger , Steffen Henssler and Christine Theiss .
Seasons 6, 7 and 10
From the beginning of the sixth season on July 19, 2014, a candidate selected by the editorial team no longer competed against a star, but instead a star against another star. Each issue continued to be about 50,000 euros. The winners themselves decided what happened to the money. Otherwise, the game principle of the first five seasons was retained. Only the special edition (No. 27) Lukas Podolski vs. Elton was played differently with eleven designated disciplines. The show ended here as soon as a candidate scored at least 34 out of a possible 66 points. This was possible in the eighth game at the earliest. This rating system was later adopted for Schlag den beste .
In the summer of 2018, the tenth season started based on the concept of seasons 6 and 7.
Seasons 8, 9 and since 10
After Raab had ended his TV career in December 2015, ProSieben announced on February 12, 2016 that the show would be continued under the moderation of Elton . Instead of being recorded, the show was broadcast live in prime time and the design was adapted to the earlier Schlag den Raab. Furthermore, two prominent candidates competed against each other. As with Schlag den Raab , they usually played up to fifteen games. If a candidate wins the first ten games, the 55 points received are not enough for the overall victory, the required number of 61 points is only possible with the eleventh game at the earliest. Since the adaptation as a live broadcast, the winner has received 100,000 euros. As of summer 2017, the live broadcasts of Schlag den Star were discontinued in favor of the program Schlag den Henssler .
After the end of Schlag den Henssler, the format will be produced again as a Saturday evening show. In December 2018, the tenth season continued based on the concept of seasons 8 and 9.
Moderators, commentators and referees
2009, 2014–2015 | Stefan Raab |
2010 | Matthias Opdenhövel |
2011-2013 | Steven Gätjen |
since 2016 | Elton |
Moderator
The first season 2009 hosted Stefan Raab himself. From the second to the fifth season, the respective Schlag-den-Raab presenter also moderated Schlag den Star (Season 2: Matthias Opdenhövel , Seasons 3-5: Steven Gätjen ), during Raab acted as a joker. The sixth and seventh seasons only took place with prominent candidates, so Raab moderated himself again. The presenter since the eighth season is Elton . While Elton had always appeared in his classic, striking red suit with a checked shirt as the presenter of the game Embarrassing or Cashing within Schlag den Raab and TV in the past , he was now finally wearing it again, as with the announcement “new candidates, new suit new episodes of Schlag den Star “was already announced in the advertising trailer, a blue suit with a black shirt. When it is the turn of the game to disgrace or cash in, Elton swaps his jacket for the traditional red jacket, which he wore as a presenter of disgrace or cashing before Raab withdrew from TV . This jacket swap has become a tradition and a kind of running gag in Schlag den Star . The red jacket is usually brought to him along with the moderation cards by the show assistant Korinna Kramer.
Role of Stefan Raab
Stefan Raab was actively involved in every issue in seasons 1 to 7.
After the moderation in the first season he got a new role as Joker from the second season. The candidate had to use Raab in one of the first six games in which the entire duel cannot be decided by a “match ball”. Raab then ran for the candidate in the chosen discipline. If he won, the contestant was awarded points for that game. Until the show on September 15, 2011, Raab was unbeaten in his role as Joker. Guido Cantz ended this winning streak in the game "Quiz". Then Raab lost one more time as a joker in the show on July 14, 2012 against Steffen Henssler; again in the game "Quiz". However, in either case, Raab's failure did no harm to the candidate he represented. The winemaker Sebastian lost the show on July 14, 2012, but a victory for the Joker would not have changed anything. On June 22, 2013 Raab lost to Matze Knop in the game "dice". The candidate Jan also lost the show.
If the candidate was injured and therefore could not play any other sports games, Stefan Raab could, with the consent of the star, represent the candidate in these games.
The sixth and seventh seasons were again moderated by Stefan Raab. At the end of 2015, Stefan Raab retired from active television business and was no longer involved in Schlag den Star in front of the camera from season eight .
2009–2010, 2012–2013, 2015–2016 | Frank Buschmann |
2011, 2014, 2016 (episode 31), 2018 (episode 41), since 2019 | Ron Ringguth |
2017-2018 | Elmar Paulke |
commentator
Since the 11th season, the games have been commented on by Ron Ringguth , who previously also took over the commentary in seasons 3 and 6 and in the 31st (season 8) and 41st edition (season 10). In previous broadcasts, Elmar Paulke (seasons 9 and 10) and Frank “Buschi” Buschmann (other issues) commented on the games.
For some games, the commentator cannot be heard in the studio in order not to influence the game.
notary
In the background, a notary monitors the correct course of the duel. He can intervene if necessary, but this rarely happens.
referee
In sporting competitions, referees from the respective sport or a related discipline are used. The moderator directs the other games.
expenditure
The first four issues were broadcast weekly on Fridays from March 13, 2009 at the end of the anniversary week “10 years TV total ”. Stefan Effenberg , Boris Becker , Stefan Kretzschmar and Wigald Boning were involved as prominent opponents . Effenberg was the only celebrity to win the duel against his opponent, Becker and Boning lost quite clearly, while the duel between Kretzschmar and candidate Sven was only decided in the last game.
The second season was also broadcast on Fridays in 2010. Joey Kelly was the only celebrity to win the duel against his opponent. The WBA middleweight boxing champion Felix Sturm is the only celebrity who has lost without a point. The third season was broadcast on Thursdays in autumn 2011, and all four issues were won by the candidates.
The fourth and fifth seasons ran on Saturdays in 2012 and 2013, but were not broadcast on a weekly basis as was previously the case. In 2013 there were several premieres in the fifth season. In the show with Christine Theiss there was the first duel between two women. In addition, for the first time all celebrities of a season could win their duels. Tom Beck was only defeated in the fourth game "Quiz" against the joker Stefan Raab, the candidate Lajos won no game himself.
The show's seventh season aired in July and August 2015. The duels took place between Elton and Lukas Podolski , Sophia Thomalla and Fernanda Brandão , Luke Mockridge and Ross Antony , and between Daniel Aminati and Stefan Effenberg, with Aminati and Effenberg already facing a candidate in the 1st and 4th season. The moderator was again Stefan Raab. Frank Buschmann commented on the duels again.
After Stefan Raab left, Schlag den Raab took over the former on-air design from the eighth season (with the exception of the 39th and 40th edition) . Since then, the show has been produced in HD and broadcast live from the Brainpool studios in Cologne-Mülheim with a maximum of 15 (or 16 in the event of a tie) games ; music acts also appeared in the shows for the first time.
All shows can be seen on the video-on-demand website Myspass.de.

Special occurrences
- In the episode broadcast on September 22, 2011, the candidate Winfried suffered an Achilles tendon rupture in the third game "Rennball" , so that in the subsequent game all physically demanding games against DJ BoBo were played by Stefan Raab. As a joker, Raab not only played one game, but three games (game 5, 6 and 7).
- At the same time as the 25th episode was recorded on July 4, 2015, ProSieben published the press release that Stefan Raab would be leaving the television business by the end of the year. The candidates, the team and the audience only found out about this after the recording.
- In the game Animals , in which the animals had to be named in addition to the photos shown in the 25th edition, there were six photographs that were already used in the 39th edition of Schlag den Raab in the same game: anteater, whale shark, toucan, cuckoo , Proboscis monkey and admiral.
- In issue 29 (April 9, 2016), the first show that was moderated by Raab's former show intern Elton , who had already moderated the quiz embarrassing or cashing at Schlag den Raab and TV total after Raab's withdrawal from TV , there was one Special feature: When it was the turn of the game to disgrace or cash in, he said to himself and quickly ran backstage , in order to then descend the show stairs in the usual manner to the cheering of the audience and then (again) the candidates Henning Baum and Matthias Introducing Steiner . In the meantime, Elton had also exchanged his blue jacket for the traditional red jacket, which he wore in combination with red suit trousers and a checked shirt when he appeared as a presenter of embarrassing or cashing . The Elton jacket swap has since developed into a tradition in Schlag den Star , Schlag den Henssler and Schlag den Beste . In the 51st edition, the game for the Dutch opponents was "Blamierje or Kassierje" and Elton wore an orange jacket.
- In the broadcast on July 9, 2016, there was game 13 with the title "Assign". Among other things, eight states should be assigned the respective heads of state. As the correct answer from candidate Tom Beck , Heinz Fischer was recognized as head of state of Austria . At this point in time, however, Heinz Fischer had not been President of Austria for a day, as he left office on July 8, 2016. Since it was a live broadcast, this answer was also wrong at the time of production.
- In the same game, the questioning team made another mistake: the name of the Polish president was listed as Andrzej Duba; he is actually called Andrzej Du d a.
- In the March 11, 2017 issue, Joey Kelly injured his knee during an obstacle course (Game 6). Although he wanted to continue the game, the doctor present and the producers decided to abandon it and ascribe the six points to his opponent Alexander Klaws. Kelly then received medical treatment and he was able to participate in all other games.
- In the 41st edition, the game "Eis Quadrathlon" (game 10) was about running across an ice rink faster than your opponent with four different pieces of play equipment and thus hitting a target. Sarah Lombardi completed the task in 10:04 minutes. Subsequently, after 6:26 minutes when hitting the last target, Eko Fresh illegally crossed a line that marked the minimum allowed distance. The referee reported the failed attempt, but the director did not notice and stopped the time, apparently assuming that the game was over and Eko Fresh was the winner. This continued the game, but the faded-in clock did not continue to run until about 40 seconds later, so that Eko Fresh, who did not manage to hit the final target again, was already declared a loser when it showed 9:24 minutes.
- Max Mutzke suffered a torn muscle fiber in fencing (game 10) in the 45th edition , but won the game anyway.
- In the 47th edition, in the “mistake duel” (game 8), the candidates were shown two fields with twenty pictures each, of which they were supposed to recognize exactly the five pictures that were not the same in both fields. In the first round (according to the example), however, seven pictures were not the same. Möhring buzzed first and had selected five other pictures than the displayed solution. Möhring received the point.
- In the 49th and 50th edition, there was no studio audience due to the coronavirus pandemic and the music acts did not take place. In the 51st edition, a music act took place despite the lack of a studio audience.
- In the 51st edition, the structure of the game "Doors" (Game 11) was incorrect. Meis and Becker should unlock them in a roundel with 8 locked doors with the help of their key ring with numbered keys and (if desired) lock them behind them. They both started 4 doors apart and the object of the game was to catch up with the other. However, an identical lock was incorrectly installed in two doors. Meis won this game because Becker had already used the required key and excluded it, as the rules stipulated that each key only fit one lock in only one door. The game was canceled, instead the substitute game "The Millstone" was played, which Meis won. Elton admitted that there was a similar problem on the same door during rehearsals. Furthermore, Ron Ringguth was criticized as a commentator on the program for having made a comment to the candidate Becker in relation to the death of George Floyd , which was received as inappropriate. After the distancing from the station ProSieben, he apologized for it.
