The Heavytones ( original spelling heavytones ) are a German instrumental band that became known to a wide public primarily as a band from the former late night show TV .

Band history

The band had their first TV appearance on January 15, 2001 after TV total moved from Rudolfplatz to the new studio in the Capitol within the city of Cologne . At the request of the moderator Stefan Raab, the band was put together by drummer Herbert Jösch , with whom Raab already appeared in the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest . Originally the name of the band was Herb and the Heavytones .

In 2003 the Heavytones toured Germany for the first time in the formation and played the songs that were totally known from TV in full length with the support of singers Ron T. and Henrik Wager . In the show, they had joint appearances with stars such as Joe Cocker , Lionel Richie , James Brown , Kylie Minogue , Busta Rhymes , Bootsy Collins and Michael Bublé .

The band was responsible for the musical accompaniment of several casting competitions organized by Raab. From the end of 2003 the Heavytones supported the candidates in the SSDSGPS competition , in which Max Mutzke emerged as the winner. They not only arranged and played the winning song Can't Wait Until Tonight , but also took part with Mutzke in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest and came in eighth with him. Some band members recorded songs on Max Mutzke's first two albums. From the end of 2007 the band played at SSDSDSSWEMUGABRTLAD with the winner Stefanie Heinzmann and Gregor Meyle . In 2010, 2011 and 2012 they also provided the music in the shows Our Star for Oslo , Our Song for Germany and Our Star for Baku . At the beginning of the final show of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 they performed together with Stefan Raab, Anke Engelke and Judith Rakers with a rockabilly version of Lenas Satellite .

The band was part of the TV total Quizboxen show broadcast in 2012 and 2013 , as well as the TV total pageantry in February 2013 . In addition, some band members took part in the Wok World Cup .

On March 13, 2006, TV total started the Heavytones Kids campaign to form a band made up of children between the ages of 6 and 14 who replaced the professionals from April 18 to 20, 2006. On the occasion of the 2000th edition of the program, the participants at the time came together again on February 20, 2014 and played Through the Monsoon into and out of the advertising. A piece that they had rehearsed and played eight years earlier.

On December 16, 2015, the Heavytones played for the last time after almost 15 years in the television program TV total , which was discontinued with this issue.

During the last edition of the live game show Schlag den Raab on December 19, 2015, the Heavytones played the show's theme song. At the end of the program, they interpreted One Moment in Time and Run Rudolph Run with Stefan Raab, who ended his television career. In the credits of the show, the band played the song Universe 2001, as they did on TV totally .

The band was an integral part of Stefan Raab's three live shows in Cologne's Lanxess Arena between October and December 2018. The line-up of the band largely corresponded to the line-up of the last issue of TV Total . The musicians on the trumpet and guitar were replaced by other former band members.

In 2019 they were part of the show Mein Lied für Dich , hosted by Judith Williams . The Heavytones also played Gottschalk's big 80s show on the ZDF program .

On May 16, 2020 the band was part of the first Free European Song Contest (FreeESC). They played with a similar line-up as in Stefan Raab Live! .

music

The Heavytones repertoire encompasses many styles of music. They play songs from Earth, Wind and Fire to Jamiroquai to current songs from the charts. On March 5, 2006, the first CD N ° 1 was released with songs written by the band members. The Heavytones were supported vocally by Henrik Wager and Worthington Davis. The second CD, Freaks of Nature , was released on March 19, 2010, and reached number 85 on the album charts. On November 20, 2015, the album Songs That Didn't Make it to the Show was released , with which they went on tour.

In the summer of 2019 they played several concerts, including the homage "50 Years of Earth, Wind and Fire" to the American soul and funk band with Roman Lob and Worthington Davis. On May 21, 2020 the EP A Tribute To Earth Wind & Fire was released , on which cover versions can be heard. Roman Lob, Worthington Davis, Cosmo Klein and Henrik Wager supported the Heavytones.
