Lena Meyer-Landrut during a rehearsal for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 in the Telenor Arena near Oslo

Satellite is an English-language pop music -Titel, the Julie Frost and John Gordon wrote. They won with the song on May 29, 2010 the Eurovision Song Contest in Bærum near Oslo ; it was interpreted by Lena Meyer-Landrut . After A Bit of Peace (1982) by Ralph Siegel, it is the second winning entry for Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest . The song was selected for the finale by Our Star for Oslo on March 12, 2010, where it was interpreted by Jennifer Braun .

production

The song comes from the pen of the American Julie Frost and the Dane John Gordon and was not written specifically for the Eurovision competition in 2007. Julie Frost, the main composer of the song, works for the American company RedZone Entertainment . At the time the song was written, she had never heard of the Eurovision Song Contest and did not know that such a competition existed. Frost had written the lyrics and the melody about two to three years before the competition in a cabin in the woods of the US state of Georgia . She emailed the simple guitar vocal song to John Gordon, who lives in Denmark, who finished the song. Both had worked together for over two years, according to Frost in an interview in late May 2010.

Gordon's own company worked with the music label EMI , which sent the song to Universal Music . The major label then submitted the title for the finale of Our Star for Oslo . A team led by Stefan Raab selected it from over 300 new compositions submitted for the finale of Our Star for Oslo on March 12, 2010.

According to the songwriters, Satellite is "a little bubbly song that is simple and sweet with funny lyrics (Det er en lille sang" bubbly ", som er temmelig enkel og sød og med en sjov tekst)". Copywriter Julie Frost explains that it's about all the crazy and secret things a girl does and feel when she's in love. A man could make her feel all sorts of things at the same time - happy but disturbed and helpless. On the sidelines of the Eurovision Song Contest, the composer said of Meyer-Landrut's interpretation that she could "imagine no one else singing this song."

John Gordon and André "Brix" Buchmann, Ingo Politz and Bernd Wendtland from Valicon were responsible for production. Sascha “Busy” Bühren was responsible for the remastering . As chairman of the USfO / Raab TV label, Stefan Raab was the production supervisor.

Musical style

The song is in the key of B minor , with the dominant (F sharp) in the cadence (B - E - F sharp) being predominantly replaced by A major . The chromatic course of the bass line in the last part of the stanza is remarkable: the minor tonic h becomes a minor tonic seventh chord with a major seventh (A sharp), which is played in the bass, followed by A major. This creates a line progression . The minor subdominant e is then used for the first time in the refrain.

In the bridge there are G ( major parallel of the subdominant ) and F sharp ( dominant ) in addition to the base chords , and the melody differs greatly from the verse.

The version of this song sung by Lena Meyer-Landrut differs greatly in its musical design from the ballad-like version sung by Jennifer Braun at the final show of Our Star for Oslo . In Braun's version, the subdominant parallel G is used in the verse and the line progression is dispensed with. By ending the stanza on A (VII. Degree of B and dominant of D) the transition to the refrain , which is in D minor, is made easier. The modulation has the consequence that the chorus in the song stands out more and the title Satellite becomes more conspicuous for the listener. Another consequence is the extended range, which puts the vocal skills of the singer in the foreground. Braun's bridge is also in D minor.

publication

The single was released on March 16, 2010. The song is also featured on Meyer-Landrut's debut album My Cassette Player , which was released on May 7, 2010. It was already available as a download on March 13, 2010 and took first place in the German iTunes store charts.

Within three days the song was downloaded 40,000 times from the sales portals. After the first week of sales, Satellite was number one in the German single charts and had already reached gold status with 150,000 copies sold (up to then). Of these, over 100,000 sales were downloads, making the title a new weekly record. Satellite reached platinum status in mid-April with 300,000 copies sold . Due to the high download sales and radio appearances in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg, the title reached 8th place in the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles in April 2010 . Also in the Austrian charts, the single was able to place high and became the most successful native of Germany Euro Vision Song Contest title since Can not Wait Until Tonight by Max Mutzke in 2004. In Switzerland, the song is the most successful in Germany Original Grand Prix title since Nicole's Little Peace in 1982. Even before the competition, the title was at number 41 in the Swedish charts and 56th in the Czech charts. After the Eurovision Song Contest, Satellite was once again able to conquer the top of the German single charts, this also succeeded in Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland as well as in the Eurochart Hot 100 singles . At that time it was the second most downloaded title in Germany with 464,000 copies sold.

Music video

The music video focusing on the singer and her dance style was recorded the night after the final of the German qualifying round . It premiered on March 16, 2010 shortly before the 8 p.m. Tagesschau in Erste . It was then shown simultaneously on ProSieben , Sat.1 , kabel eins and N24 shortly before prime time . On YouTube, the two official videos from tvtotal.de and eurovision.tv had a combined over 80 million views by the beginning of October 2014.

Eurovision Song Contest

In the preliminary round, Our Star for Oslo , the title was performed both as a ballad by Jennifer Braun and as an up-tempo number by Lena Meyer-Landrut. With the vote for Lena Meyer-Landrut, the audience decided at the same time for their version of the song.

On March 23, 2010, the NDR in Oslo was awarded a wildcard and was able to determine the starting place itself. The broadcaster decided to have Lena Meyer-Landrut with start number 22 appear in a field of 25 finalists. Since Germany is one of the four financially strongest member states of the European Broadcasting Union , this title was automatically qualified for the final. There he took first place with 246 points, ahead of the band maNga from Turkey (170 points) and the Romanian duo Paula Seling and Ovi (162 points). This was only the second German victory after Nicole in 1982 .

In contrast to Meyer-Landrut's appearances at Wetten, dass ..? , Candid Camera? , Ask the mouse , NDR Talk Show , Schlag den Raab and TV total , where the music was played live with the Heavytones , she got choir support from the singers Maya Saban , Anji Hinke, Cheri Kedida and during her simple appearance in Oslo Grace Risch. In addition, on May 25, 2010, there was a live version on the TV total show, in which Lena Meyer-Landrut was accompanied on the violin by Alexander Rybak .

Reviews

While Jan Delay , juror on the show Our Star for Oslo , found the song Satellite to be mediocre ("I've heard the song for the first time and I don't think that's a big hit now, to be honest.") La Toya Jackson : “I don't know the show, but judging by the song alone, I think Lena has a very good chance. It sounds really good. […] That's great. The song is very catchy, a real catchy tune. " Ralph Siegel thinks the song is" nice ", but criticizes Lena Meyer-Landrut's vocal qualities:" She is sweet, unfortunately she rarely hits the tone. "

laut.de said, "that Raab's own composition Love Me is the better song compared to Satellite and the catchy-playful Bee would have been the better entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. Lena is really not to blame here, because that's what her fans wanted. "

The version of Satellite performed by Lena was criticized as the worse arrangement compared to the ballad.

Cover versions

The German pop band Pur recorded the track in their live program at short notice in 2010 around the Eurovision Song Contest and played it in the form of a medley together with a newly written version of their hit Lena . Nikka Costa interpreted the song live and unplugged during a visit to Germany, accompanied only by guitar and drums, on You FM . This version was used in playlists at other German radio stations. The composer Julie Frost interpreted the song in the German TV talk show by Markus Lanz herself to the guitar. Lanz accompanied her on the piano. The finished version with Frost as the singer, which was submitted to Unser Star für Oslo by Meyer-Landrut and Jennifer Braun before the first releases, is also circulating on YouTube .

In addition to numerous parodies of the song (such as by Katrin Bauerfeind in Harald Schmidt , Martina Hill in Switch reloaded or Otto Waalkes in his Hansel and Gretel medley) , a version rewritten by the Münster student band Uwu Lena as a World Cup song was included special attention to the title Schland o Schland . After the video, which was circulated on the Internet, encountered copyright concerns, the band reached an agreement with the owner of the exploitation rights, EMI Publishing and the record company Universal Deutschland, to market the song and thus reached number four in the German charts. An a cappella version was released in 2010 on the album Our Time by the band medlz . In 2011 Lena Meyer-Landrut sang the song in Sesamstrasse with the German text Bert, oh Bert written by Gerd-Ekken Gerdes. At the opening act of the Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf, Stefan Raab , Judith Rakers , Anke Engelke and Lena sang the song together in a rockabilly -Version.

In 2013, Satellite was rewritten for a chocolate bar commercial for the Turkish food company Ülker . In October 2013, the Dutch pop duo Sugarfree released a version called Fantasie .

In February 2017 Conchita Wurst performed Satellite as a ballad version in the TV show Unser Song 2017 , the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 .

In June 2017 interpreted Mark Forster the song in the VOX telecast Sing my song - The exchange concert .
