Neon (Lonely People) is the title of an English-language pop song from the 2012 album Stardust by the German singer Lena . It was released on March 15, 2013 as their sixth single in a remixed single mix.

background

Neon (Lonely People) was written by Lena Meyer-Landrut in collaboration with British singer-songwriters Mathew Benbrook and Pauline Taylor, who had previously worked with Paolo Nutini , Dido and Faithless . The song is produced by Swen Meyer .

The song was released as the second single from Lena's third album Stardust . Neon (Lonely People) was released as a newly mixed single version, for which the Cologne producer Jochen Naaf is responsible. Naaf has already worked with other German artists such as Klee and Polarkreis 18 , as well as international musicians such as Lady Gaga . The radio premiere of the single version took place on February 18th. Already on February 22nd, the album Stardust appeared in a new edition, which no longer contained the previous album version, but already contained the new single mix, on various download portals.

In an interview with the Universal record company, Lena explained how the song was made:

“I think everyone knows this feeling when you feel lonely, even though there are so many people around you at the moment. At night in a club, for example. When the whole world seems so full and at the same time so empty. But then you run into a certain person on the dance floor and suddenly it is gone, the loneliness. That's what neon is all about . Everything is fine when the music comes on. Or something like that."

The chorus of the song sums up the theme symbolically: "As the sun goes down / Neon is all we have / And it's calling all the lonely people / As the night goes on / We're trying a different song / So we won ' t be one of the lonely people. ”[When the sun goes down, the neon light is all we have. And it calls the lonely people to it. During the night we'll try another song so we're not lonely.]

publication

Neon (Lonely People) first appeared on Lena's third studio album Stardust on October 12, 2012 in fourth position on the track list. On March 15, 2013 the newly mixed version was released as a single with a remix by the Berlin producer team Beatgees as the B-side. The digital remix EP featured an exclusive remix by iTunes by Yoad Nevo - a British producer who has also remixed for the Pet Shop Boys and Moby .

Criticism

Kevin Holtmann from Plattentests.de wrote: Neon (Lonely People) have “very big hit potential, the chorus stays in the ear, invites you to sway along and whistle in front of you. The fact that the lyrics are a bit simple is forgiven at this point - you didn't expect much in this regard anyway. ”He also named the song along with the title song as the highlight of the album.

Live performances

Lena performed the song for the first time in an acoustic version on July 30, 2012 during an album presentation in front of press representatives in Munich. The first presentation on television took place on Sat.1 breakfast television on October 12, 2012. The first live performance in front of a large audience was on February 14, 2013 in Hanover during the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Cover design

The cover for Neon (Lonely People) was photographed by Sandra Ludewig and designed by the Berlin company Eat, Sleep + Design. It shows a lilac-colored portrait of the singer. Her hair is tied at the back of her head and she is facing the left edge of the picture. She wears glittering make-up around her eyes.

In the lower right corner of the picture you can see the lettering "Lena", underneath a jagged line and again below the lettering "Neon (Lonely People)". The font is in white.

Music video

The music video for Neon (Lonely People) was filmed in the Rathenau-Hallen in Berlin in early February 2013. The director was again Bode Brodmüller, who was already responsible for the music video for the previous single Stardust . The video premiere took place on March 1st.
