reception

Criticism

The reviews of Crystal Sky were mixed. While some critics praised the musical change towards more electronic sounds as courageous and successful, others chalked up the individual songs as being too interchangeable.

  • “Similar to a chorale, the solemnity of the opener“ The Girl ”increases by a whole lot in the chorus. Structurally, the whole thing isn't bubblegum pop, the piece is too overgrown for that. Not a bad opener actually and also the best piece on the record. [...] There is little to complain about for a pop production. […] However international the record is, it sounds interchangeable. […] For a truly memorable and independent work, Crystal Sky lacks a bit of substance. ”- Markus Brandstetter, laut.de
  • “The result are familiar sounding pop melodies, sometimes underlaid with hymn-like sounds, sometimes accompanied by electronic rhythms that sound like much that is already playing on the radio. For them and their musical development it may still be a realignment. [...] This album doesn't take any real artistic risk. ”- Hannah Feiler, Frankfurter Allgemeine
  • “Her stubbornly overemphasized voice still penetrates, but is tamed a bit, so that Lena sounds less like school theater than like a gently car-tuned singer, in a field surrounded by dubstep and bag pop. In it she moves safely and inconspicuously. Not a new Frollein wonder. But a confident appearance. ”- Sebastian Zabel, Rolling Stone
  • “Three years later, with Crystal Sky, there is little left of the little Fräuleinwunder. And that's a good thing. Instead, the duck-like undertone in Lena's voice has largely disappeared, her singing overall higher and not always distinguishable from Ellie Goulding . Doesn't matter , because the songs by Crystal Sky sound so international that Lena can easily keep up with the pop star and would probably have a chance in the Billboard charts. ”- Lena Zschirpe, plattentests.de

Commercial win

In Germany, Crystal Sky continued the success of Lena's previous albums. After its release, the album went straight to second place in the German album charts and stayed in the top 100 for 18 weeks. In the German midweek charts, Lena topped the chart list after the first four days of sales, but at the end of the week she had to join Mountain Man beaten by Andreas Gabalier . In German-speaking countries, the album was less successful with a top 30 and top 40 placement in Austria and Switzerland .
