Gloria Theater, 2016

The Gloria Theater is a traditional multi-purpose theater in downtown Cologne . It is located on Apostelnstrasse in the immediate vicinity of the St. Aposteln Church on Neumarkt . The Gloria is used as a concert hall, party location and theater; some programs are also recorded for television.

History of the house

On November 30, 1956, the Gloria was opened as a cinema and theater. The opening film was engagement at the Wolfgangsee , the first play was Till Eulenspiegel with Gérard Philipe . From the 1970s the house was used as a porn cinema ; films with Ingrid Steeger were shown. Some things are still reminiscent of its function as a cinema, the showcases with bright neon letters in the entrance, the ticket booth or the red velvet in the auditorium.

In 1991 the cinema was closed and the Gloria was converted into an event business. The focus was on parties in the gay and lesbian area. Hella von Sinnen celebrated its premiere in 1995, Hermann Götting's birthday celebrations were a party hit, and the Kelly Family played for the benefit of AIDS . In 1994 some scenes for the film The Moving Man with Til Schweiger were filmed in the Gloria , and in 2001 Walter Bockmayer directed Wer Liebe sucht .

The theater is operated by Gastro-Event GmbH with around 50 employees. Since 2000, the completely refurbished house, equipped with the latest technology, has presented itself as a multi-purpose event location. It is divided into a theater hall with 400 seats or, if standing room is used, a maximum of 950 people and a café with 80 seats.

There are plays such as Caveman , festivals such as Sommerblut , theater sports with the Springmaus Ensemble and TV recordings such as the WDR Ladies Night with Gerburg Jahnke and Dinner for One with Ralf Schmitz and Annette Frier . As part of the NightWash or the International Cologne Comedy Festival , as at the lit.cologne literature festival, numerous events and readings take place. Numerous rock and pop concerts as well as party series are also part of the Gloria’s repertoire.
