The Cassiopeia Theater is a specialist theater for contemporary puppet and author theater . It was founded in 1989 by the artist Claudia Hann as a touring theater for the art of puppetry and has been run jointly by her and the director Udo Mierke since 1995 .

history

In 1999 the artist couple founded the standing Cassiopeia stage to complement the touring theater . This venue in Cologne is committed to the same tasks as the Cassiopeia Theater. In 2008 the stage moved from Cologne's old town to larger premises in Cologne-Holweide .

In 2004, the Cassiopeia TheaterVerlag was founded to distribute the written works of members of the ensemble and befriended theaters or writers . In 2005 the first epidrama was published as a new literary genre in the form of a theater audio book.

In terms of content, the work of the theater as an author's theater is on the one hand dedicated to the re-dramatization of classical material, which does not necessarily have to be theater texts and fairy tales, as well as the staging of contemporary literature, especially poetry as theater material. Since new works or reworking of historical material and sources are developed for the stage in the Cassiopeia Theater's own productions, the productions shown are mostly world premieres.

In terms of performance, the themes staged by the Cassiopeia Theater as well as the guest productions shown on the Cassiopeia stage seek to focus on the essentials . With this term, the team of the theater associates demands and challenges in terms of objectives and quality of its work.

The use of artefacts or art objects as performers is a special focus of the performing arts shown on the Cassiopeia stage, both in the evening program and in the family program.

The director of the Cassiopeia Theater, Udo Mierke, received an award from the EU Commission in Royan (France) in 1992 for the conception and implementation of new paths in media education. The theater has been invited to national and international festivals several times; it was repeatedly nominated for the Cologne Children's and Youth Theater Prize. His productions were selected as youth theater of the month and were the only puppet theater in the evening program to be nominated from 267 productions for Theaterzwang NRW 2006.

The team of the Cassiopeia Theater realizes around 60 to 80 performances per year on tour and a good 200 to 230 events on the Cassiopeia stage. In-house and guest productions are shown on stage, both in the family program (around 60% of the range) and in the evening program (almost 40%). The share of guest productions in the overall program of the Cassiopeia stage is around a third.
