The Studiobühne Köln (spelling: studiobühneköln ) with the attached film workshop of the University of Cologne is a free, experimental theater house in Universitätsstrasse 16a in Cologne .
history
The Studiobühne Köln has existed since 1920 and is therefore the oldest German university theater . From a purely theater business at the beginning, an experimental field of action developed beyond the medium of theater in the late 1960s. Since the 1970s, the studio stage has also been active as a film workshop and offers work opportunities in the fields of film, photo exhibitions, stage dance and, above all, theater production.
Profile and organization
The University of Cologne, as the institution and sponsor of the facility, offers a training and exercise program as part of the cooperation. Around 450 students are taught by 15 lecturers in the fields of theater , film , video and photography .
Georg Franke was head of the Studiobühne Köln for a long time, from 1970 to 2009, while his previous deputy and head of public relations, Dietmar Kobboldt, has been provisional director ever since. In March 2012 he was officially appointed head by the rectorate.
In addition to the University of Cologne , the Studiobühne also receives financial support from the Culture Office of the City of Cologne, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Kunststiftung NRW .
Furnishing
The theater on Universitätsstrasse has a stage up to 80 m² in size and can accommodate 300 spectators. For larger events, the studio stage uses the university auditorium, which has up to 1200 seats. The studio stage is also designed and accessible for disabled people .
concept
The Studiobühne is one of the leading independent theaters in Cologne. As a university theater and experimental theater, the Studiobühne wants to offer a forum for both in-house productions and for co-productions with many professional Cologne independent groups (residence groups) as well as groups from Germany and abroad. A special focus is the testing of artistic working methods and the handling of different media as well as intermedia experiments. In 2008 the Studiobühne Köln was one of the venues for the theater festival “ Politics in Free Theater ”. A special feature are the annual binational festivals theaterszene europa , university theater weeks with international partners. For this purpose, the studio stage is regularly funded by the German Academic Exchange Service .
