On average, four to five new productions are staged in-house per season, including modern staged classics and piece developments with which the theater reacts to current social developments. There is also an extensive repertoire operation and numerous, in some cases international, guest performances. The thematic focus is on plays that deal with socially or politically relevant problems and / or issues.

With the biennial africologneFESTIVAL initiated in 2011, with numerous guest appearances and performances outside Cologne as well as the annual summer guest program, the Theater im Bauturm has around 300 events annually between 22,000 and 26,000 spectators.

history

A founding collective of actors, directors and other interested parties founded the Theater im Bauturm in 1983 in the building in which it is still located today. The founding collective included Hans-Georg Bögner (managing director of the SK Stiftung Kultur ), who is still the chairman of the sponsoring association. The building belonged to the architects and engineers “Bauturm”, which was founded in 1968 by Erich Schneider-Wessling and Peter Busmann in Cologne and to which the theater owes its name. From 1972 Godfrid Haberer also joined the independent group of architects.

In November 2012, the biennial art prize of the Friends' Association of the Theater im Bauturm went to the Schneider-Wesseling, Busmann and Haberer families for their longstanding support as landlords. Today the building belongs solely to the Schneider-Wesseling family.

Timpani and trumpets by Bertolt Brecht based on George Farquhar was the first play to be performed at the Theater im Bauturm. The premiere took place on October 7, 1983.

The bass of Patrick Süskind had on June 7, 1984 at the Theater in Bauturm premiere. The production with Axel Siefer in the leading role ran until June 12, 2016 in a total of over 1,000 performances.

Gerhardt Haag headed the theater from 1995 to 2016 . In 2013 he received the Cologne Honorary Theater Prize for his longstanding responsible work . Since August 2016, the management has been in the hands of Laurenz Leky (theater management), Bernd Schlenkrich (management) and René Michaelsen (dramaturgy).

In 1987 the "Association of Friends and Patrons for the Theater im Bauturm eV" was founded. The association now has more than 215 members who have made numerous productions and investments possible with their contributions and donations. The “theater enthusiasts” have existed since 2009. These are the members of the association who are under 34 years of age. You actively contribute to the theater with your own program items such as lectures or guided tours.

Furnishing

The theater has 135 seats (as of 2013). The stage height is 2.90 m.

A large flag hangs on the facade of the building at Aachener Str. 26, announcing the premieres of the building. On the occasion of the premiere of the play Deportation Cast by Björn Bicker, staged by Gerhard Roiss , on April 6, 2013, the flag for the first time did not have the title, author and premiere date of the production, but a statement that thematically matched the content of the play: “ Tolerance, transfer, deportation - human dignity is inviolable? "

Building tower art award

Since 2006, the “Association of Friends and Patrons for the Theater im Bauturm eV” has been awarding the “Bauturm Art Prize” every two years, which is awarded to artists and people who have distinguished themselves through special services to support the Theater im Bauturm. The “Bauturm Art Prize” has a different form each time, because a well-known visual artist donates one of his works to give the award its external appearance. The award ceremony always takes place in the theater in the building tower.

In 2006 actress Renan Demirkan received the award. In a financially difficult situation she had agreed to rehearse the piece Love Letters free of charge and play it ten times. Since 2005 until today it has been the successful production in the building tower repertoire. The object artist Günther Uecker donated one of his nail constructions. The award ceremony took place on October 22, 2006 in the Theater im Bauturm.

In 2008 Axel Siefer , director and actor (among others in Der Kontrabaß ), was honored with the award for his commitment. In the early years he was in charge of the building tower and continued to take part in the further development of the theater. Axel Siefer received a steel sculpture by the artist Ansgar Nierhoff, who died in August 2010 .

In 2010, all those involved in the benefit reading series “Kölner read zu zwei” received the Bauturm art prize in the form of a wooden sculpture by Erwin Wortelkamp . Gisela Völger, who organized and carried out the reading series for the first few years, accepted the award on behalf of the audience. The laudation was given by the Cologne lawyer Louis Peters.

In 2012, the award was given to the long-time landlords and supporters of the theater: Gabi and Erich Schneider-Wessling , Vreneli and Peter Busmann as well as Gerda and Gottfrid Haberer. The award was donated by Gerd Bonfert. The award ceremony took place on October 21, 2012 in the theater in the building tower itself.

In 2017, the pantomime Milan Sladek , who in 1974 set up the stage in the premises of a former printing works, on which the theater in the building tower now plays, was awarded the prize.
