The Freie Werkstatt Theater Köln e. V. (FWT) is operated in a non-profit manner. It is funded by the city of Cologne and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The Freie Werkstatt Theater Köln was founded in 1977 as part of the nationwide model experiment for artists and students. Since 1995, it has had a redesigned theater in Cologne's Südstadt , in a listed building. Since then, the FWT has two venues, two foyers, rehearsal, office and workshop rooms on five floors.

Since 1979, the FWT has been the first theater in the Federal Republic of Germany to develop theater pieces with its own old-age theater ensemble that reflect the life and contemporary history of those involved, address the retirement age and life as an elderly person today.

Artistic Director

Until 2012 the theater was directed by Dieter Scholz, co-founder of the FWT, and Ingrid Berzau. After a good three decades, they were replaced by Inken Kautter and Gerhard Seidel. Gerhard Seidel has headed the FWT alone since the 2015/16 season. Dieter Scholz received the Federal Cross of Merit in 1995 and the Cologne Honorary Theater Prize in 2007. Ingrid Berzau was also awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2010 for her special commitment as artistic director of the FWT.

effect

The theater has made a name for itself primarily through its adaptations and dramatizations of literature as well as through unconventionally staged classics. For its concept, the FWT was the first theater to receive the funding award for independent theaters of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which was awarded for the first time in 1990.
