Timothy A. Smiddy

Timothy Aloysius Smiddy (* 1875 ; † 1962 ) was an Irish economist and diplomat .

Smiddy studied in France and Germany . Before being posted to the United States in 1922 , he was a professor (1909-1924) and dean at University College Cork . After the United States established diplomatic relations with Ireland, Smiddy, who had already been the unofficial representative of the Irish Free State in Washington for some time, was able to take over the leadership of the Irish mission in Washington, DC as envoy in June 1924. In October of the same year he presented his letter of accreditation. He held this post until 1929.

He was then High Commissioner in the United Kingdom from 1929 to 1930 , was a member of the Tariff Commission in Dublin from 1930 to 1933 , and finally held a high office in the Department of Local Government from 1933 to 1945 .

Smiddy was a close friend of Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins . Also Éamon de Valera sought advice on economic issues of the economics professor.
