On February 14, 2013, the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 took place under the title Unser Song für Malmö , where the artist and the song for the competition taking place on May 18, 2013 in Malmö , Sweden were sought. Here were Cascada with her song Glorious emerged victorious. For the first time since 2009 , the candidate was not selected through a collaboration between ProSieben and NDR , but through a sole production by NDR.

format

There were twelve candidates to choose from for the program. One third of the winner was determined by an internet vote by the ARD radio station in the week before the preliminary decision, by a jury of experts and by televoting on the evening of the competition.

poll

After evaluating the votes, the artists were rated three times using the point system of the Eurovision Song Contest (12, 10, 8 to 1). That is, the top rated received 12 points, the others followed with 10, 8 to 1 point, two received no point.

Radio and internet

From February 7, 2013 to February 14, 2013, 8:00 p.m., listeners had the opportunity to watch the radio stations Bayern 3 , Bremen Vier , 1 Live , rbb Fritz , hr3 , MDR Jump , NDR 2 , SR 1 Europawelle and SWR3 to choose their favorites. The individual results of the radio stations were offset to form an overall result.

jury

An expert jury consisting of the musicians Tim Bendzko , Roman Lob , Anna Loos and Mary Roos as well as the music journalist and ESC commentator Peter Urban also rated the songs with points.

Televoting

The viewers had the opportunity to vote for their favorites in a given time slot through televoting .

Summary of the voting results

Finally, the points from all votes were added up. In the end, the winner and thus the representative of Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö was whoever had collected the most points from all votes.

Attendees

According to Schreiber, five representatives from the record companies Universal, Sony, Warner, EMI and Embassy of Sound, the Brainpool managing director Jörg Grabosch and the ARD entertainment manager Thomas Schreiber decided on the participants. Their names were announced in December 2012.

criticism

After the event, journalists spoke out in favor of foregoing a jury vote for the coming years. On Twitter, too, the reactions to Cascada's victory were marked by a lack of understanding of the jury's vote. Others pointed out that the vote would have gone that way without the new voting procedure.

It was also seen as problematic that three of the five jury members are under contract with the same record company ( Universal Music ) as Cascada. The NDR clearly rejected this, as the artists rated best by the jury were not under contract with Universal.

After Cascada won, allegations of plagiarism were raised. Cascada singer Natalie Horler immediately rejected this. The report commissioned by the NDR also confirmed that Cascadas Glorious was only "arranged with similar and style-typical means" as Loreen's winning title Euphoria from 2012, but that this was not plagiarism.
