The second German Schlager Festival took place on February 17, 1962 in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden . After the somewhat subdued response to the first event from the previous year, the decision was made in autumn 1961 to send the winner of the 1962 Schlager Festival to the Eurovision Grand Prix . Since this event was already announced on March 18, 1962, the Schlager Festival had to be held early.

format

From 245 titles, a jury selected 24 contributions for 12 performers, who were presented to the audience in four TV preliminary decisions. Each interpreter sang two songs in the preliminary round, of which the better rated entered the final. These broadcasts were on January 12 ( Hessischer Rundfunk ), January 19 ( Süddeutscher Rundfunk ), January 26 ( Westdeutscher Rundfunk ) and February 2 ( Bayerischer Rundfunk ).

There remained 12 titles that competed against each other in the final on February 17th in Baden-Baden, moderated by Klaus Havenstein . In the final, six broadcaster juries (BR, WDR, HR, SFB, SR and SWF) and four hall juries (each consisting of 30 members) rated their three favorites, which they gave one, two or three points. In the end, a jury awarded three extra points because there was a tie in first place. Actually, juries from Norddeutscher Rundfunk and Radio Bremen were also supposed to judge in the finals, which was not due to the flood in Hamburg the day before. Also due to the storm surge , unlike originally planned, the final could not be broadcast live on television.

The event generated a divided response. Nevertheless, some of the titles in the final round in Baden-Baden could be found in the charts and some of them have become evergreens today. Above all the winning title, which finally represented Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 1962 in Luxembourg on March 18, but only achieved a 6th place there. Conny's single sold over a million copies and was also released in Dutch, English, French and Italian.
