The third German Schlager Festival took place on June 15, 1963 in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden . After the resounding success of the previous year's winner, the German Schlager Festival had now established itself and the event was again separated from the preliminary decision on the Grand Prix Eurovision . The German participant in the Grand Prix was again determined in a separate event.

procedure

For the 1963 Schlager Festival, numerous titles were again submitted, from which a jury selected 18 titles that were presented to the audience in several preliminary radio decisions. On May 2nd, 3rd and 4th, the ARD broadcasters HR , WDR , SR , BR , SFB and SWF as well as RIAS -Berlin and Deutschlandfunk broadcast the 18 titles. Infratest then determined the 12 titles that were presented to the public at the final on June 15 in Baden-Baden. The winner was determined by 3 groups. These were, on the one hand, the 10 broadcasters, on the other hand, 200 selected people from the hall and finally the Infratest result, which had been kept secret until then.

The event received a good response. Some of the titles were also found in the music charts and some of them have become evergreens today. Above all, the winning title with which Gitte achieved her breakthrough on the German hit market. The single was sold over 1 million times and was also released in other languages. The runner-up Ob in Bombay was a great success thanks to Margot Eskens , although she did not perform the title at the festival; for foreign publications she recorded an English version under the English title Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio .
