The fourth German Schlager Festival took place on June 13, 1964 in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden . After the great success of previous years, the Deutsche Schlager-Festspiele e. V. called on lyricists and composers to submit songs for the event in the fall of 1963.

By January 1964, over 300 titles had been received, from which a 12-person jury selected 18 titles, which were presented to the public on May 9, 1964 at a television preliminary decision of the SFB . Member of the jury was among others the internationally known composer Franz Grothe .

A representative selected number of visitors from the hall and a listener survey carried out by Infratest determined the 12 participants in the final round, who presented themselves to the public on June 13th in Baden-Baden. The final round was moderated by Ursula von Manescul and Heidi Abel . The winner was determined by 3 groups. These were the 10 broadcasters, Infratest and 200 selected people from the hall (but only 179 cast their votes).

The event again generated a positive response. Some of the titles were also to be found in the charts and some of them have become evergreens today.
