Ruth Johanna Margaret Stephan (born October 27, 1925 in Altona ; † August 8, 1975 in Berlin ) was a German actress and cabaret artist .

Life

The daughter of the businessman Kurt Stephan and his wife Kriemhilde initially worked as a banker. After training as an actor with Heinz Hohenstein, Ruth Stephan played at various theaters and cabaret theaters in Berlin. She appeared next to Brigitte Mira , Gisela Trowe and Walter Gross in revues of the Greiffi cabaret and in 1951 belonged to the founding ensemble of the cabaret Die Haferstengels alongside Wolfgang Neuss and Ursula Herking . In addition, she received theater engagements in Hamburg (under Boy Gobert ) and at the State Theaters of Berlin . She also made a name for herself as an interpreter of chansons.

In 1951 Stephan made her feature film debut in the production Die Frauen des Herr S. From now on, her career took a different direction and she became a film comedian. She played alongside Heinz Rühmann ( Don't be afraid of big animals , Charley's aunt , Max, the pickpocket ), Grethe Weiser ( The Empress of China ) and often alongside Heinz Erhardt (of course the drivers , what's going on with Willi? She also became popular in her role as the schoolteacher Miss Dr. Pollhagen, or after her wedding to Dr. Knörz: Teacher Dr. Knörz, who she played in the movie series Die Lümmel von der Erste Bank (with child star Hansi Kraus ). At the beginning of the seventies, Ruth Stephan turned back to the theater.

Ruth Stephan was married to the actor Balduin Baas . In 1974 she had breast surgery and died of lung cancer in 1975. Her grave is in the Zehlendorf Forest Cemetery in Berlin. In recognition of her artistic work at Berlin theaters, a street in Ruth-Stephan-Strasse was named in her honor on February 19, 1997 in Berlin-Spandau (district Haselhorst) .
