The film describes quite freely the rapid rise and success of the singer who was famous in Germany and other European countries at the beginning of the 1930s, followed by his persecution by the National Socialists , his escape through numerous countries and finally his tragic death as an inmate of the Girenbad internment camp in Switzerland at the age of only 38.
