action

The widow Erdmann has five sons. However, her youngest son Oscar has failed. He's a liar, a cheat, and a thief who also cheers his mother's money. When the four other sons volunteered for military service, he refused to work with the gun with the words “It's too horrible - I want to live!” During the war, an enemy state recruited him to blow up an ammunition dump. He doesn't even hesitate to brutally beat up his mother, who wants to prevent this. When a guard opens fire, she is badly wounded and dies.

Her children kneel by the deathbed. During this wake soldiers pass the window and sing the German song “German women, German loyalty!”. The sons break down crying.
