Schwarzwaldmelodie is a German homeland film by Géza von Bolváry from 1956.

action

Susanne loves the poor composer Hans, but for reasons of reason she becomes engaged to the rich Herbert Olberg: Her father, a music box maker , owes him a debt. Due to the carelessness of a servant, a fire destroys the barn and the entire warehouse of the watchmaker's workshop. The suspicion of arson falls on Hans.

He dedicated the song Black Forest Melody to Susanne and, out of a disappointed love, goes to New York with the Roland Circus . He does not know about the arrest warrant against him on suspicion of arson. Hans is joined by the three vagabonds Lerche, Aribert and Luggi. They had in the Black Forest Hans the Schwarzwaldmelodie hear singing in a church, added the song to their repertoire immediately and were randomly to a record producer advised that she had the song in front of his window to hear play. He thought the melody was an old folk song and spontaneously recorded a record with the three musicians.

The circus gives its first performance in New York, but the big top is destroyed by a hurricane that hits the city shortly afterwards . The animals are threatened with sale. Lerche, Aribert and Luggi unintentionally take part in a car race, win and receive a prize of 1000 dollars, which can be used to buy food. A big PR campaign in the American newspapers finally saved the circus from ruin.

Hans and the American Harriet Morton become a couple - her father sells music boxes from the Black Forest, among other things. Like the three singers, Hans soon gets homesick and so he visits a Bavarian restaurant in New York, where all of a sudden his Black Forest melody is played from a record. Hans investigates and learns that the song has become a hit without his knowledge. The three vagabonds created the basis for this with their recording of the title. Hans asserts his copyrights and gets money.

When he finds out in a letter that his mother is not doing well, he immediately returns to the Black Forest. There he learns that it's not about her, but about the watch workshop, which is only slowly recovering after the fire. Hans brought Harriet and her father with him, who promptly ordered 60,000 music boxes from Susanne's father. Hans is arrested on the basis of the old arrest warrant, but is soon released when the real culprit reports to the police. Since Susanne wants to marry Herbert Olberg in 14 days, Hans meets with Susanne one last time to say goodbye to her. Herbert observes both of them, who find it difficult to part, and realizes that he will never be the right man for Susanne. He dissolves the engagement and gives his consent to a relationship between Susanne and Hans, who are now a couple.

production

The film was shot in the Ufa Studios Berlin and in the Circus Roland , among others . The Blasihof in the Black Forest town of Geschwend , now part of Todtnau, also served as a backdrop.

The world premiere took place on August 9, 1956 at the Wilhelma in Stuttgart .

criticism

Schwarzwaldmelodie was published in 1956 with the line “A film that touches our hearts like a familiar folk song. A song of praise for love of one's homeland and human loyalty. "

The lexicon of international films described the Black Forest melody as "a soulful homeland pleasure game sailing in the wake of the Black Forest girl's success, spiced with a bit of a circus atmosphere". Other critics described the film as a "soulful, banal homeland pleasure game" and a "tear-presser".

Cinema said: “Natural scenery, village parlors, but also 50s state-of-the-art living culture - these are the real stars of this Heimat film. Conclusion: lard and singing in beautiful nature. "

On the occasion of a television screening of the film in 1991, Der Spiegel said: “A film like a cuckoo clock : very conservative, very German, on the outside rather ugly - and inside almost completely hollow. Geza von Bolvary staged this low mountain snout in 1956. "
