action

Two friends, Gerhard Meyen, the son of a musical instrument maker, and Peter Hansen, who is about to take over his parents' farm since his father has died, celebrate the end of school with other high school graduates. The two friends were joined by the Swede Ursula Benthien three years ago, who lives here with her aunt and formed a friendly trio with the boys. Recently, however, new feelings developed between Gerhard and Ursula. Before Gerhard left to study music in Hamburg, he went to the familiar places with her again, where they had often stayed in recent years. To say goodbye, he gave Ursula a sheet of music with a song specially composed for her to express his feelings for her.

Gerhard settles in quickly in Hamburg and can keep himself afloat with various student jobs. One day the singer Doris Dahl contacts him, because she is looking for a substitute for her sick pianist. After initial difficulties between the two of them - Gerhard, for example, criticized their artistic achievements - their relationship improved. On the other hand, Gerhard's willingness to write suffers, because he is now very busy. He signed up for Ursula's birthday, but she waits in vain at the train station. Gerhard was given the opportunity to conduct several of his compositions at an event for young composers. Of course it was arranged by Doris.

But Peter came for Ursula's birthday and brought her a foal from his new stud as a present. Although her aunt is of the opinion that Peter would be a better partner, Ursula cannot be talked out of her love for Gerhard. That's why she goes to Hamburg to attend his concert. When she enters the hall, "her" song is being played. At the end of the concert, she waits for Gerhard to celebrate the success and preferably with him alone. But he already has an appointment, but he takes Ursula with him to the celebration. When Doris tries to outdo the country girl, Ursula leaves. Gerhard's new friends are not her world. Back home, Ursula decides to marry Peter. The wedding ceremony will take place soon.

Gerhard continues to be successful and writes the music for a comedy. Ursula and Peter are going to Hamburg for the premiere. But Gerhard cannot deal with the new situation and brings Ursula to a tearful outburst with his ironic remarks, which ultimately leads to Ursula and Peter rushing back to their modest home. Gerhard and Doris also want to get married now. There was a scandal on the bachelorette party when one of Gerhard's friends put on “Ursula's song”. In his anger, Gerhard slams the record on the floor and drives to his father. He wants to calm him down, but Gerhard doesn't want to hear that. He then drives to Ursula and Peter and tells them about his upcoming wedding, only to get back in the car afterwards. In a curve he hits a tree and comes to the hospital. Every day he gets a visit from Ursula, and Gerhard realizes that he can't get away from her after all. Doris recognizes the situation and withdraws. Peter also notices what is happening and does not want to stand between his wife and boyfriend. He even invites his friend to relax on his farm. But Ursula insists on her marriage and says that Gerhard should leave after the harvest festival. Although Ursula and Gerhard get very close once again while dancing at the harvest festival, Ursula does not change her mind and stays with Peter.

After several years, Ursula is now alone because Peter was killed in an accident, she reads Gerhard's letters, which she had not opened before. This has since achieved successes all over the world. When he appears again in Hamburg, she goes to his concert. Gerhard is overjoyed to see her and asks her during the break to stay with him forever; he was fed up with traveling the world and wanted to spend his time with it now. But Ursula refuses and goes back to her estate.
