Tilla Morland is a celebrated operetta diva who has just achieved another great audience success. She now wants to celebrate this with friends in the Carlton Bar after the premiere. Her greatest success in the Singspiel is the song “Adieu, mein kleine Gardeoffizier”, and it is not surprising that you are asked to sing this hit again in an intimate group. A guest at a neighboring table is not in the least interested in her artistic performance; rather, in the middle of the song, he calls the waiter over to pay. After paying the bill, the guest gets up and leaves the restaurant. Tilla, who is not used to such behavior as an operetta star, is so outraged by this disrespect that she does not want to calm down even days later. She withdraws completely, even her best friends don't get to see her.
Since Tilla now needs a private secretary for written correspondence and other business matters, she is looking for a suitable, capable man. She finds him in the person of the impoverished ex-officer Ulrich Weidenau, who applies to her for this position. Tilla doesn't believe she can believe her eyes: it's the man with the brusque behavior during her song presentation. At least he explains his reasons for his behavior at the time. Over time, the two young people fall in love, but cannot or do not want to admit their feelings. Weidenau, who is by nature very formal and reserved, also believes that he cannot bind Tilla to himself in the long term, because she is used to a certain standard of living - luxury that he cannot offer her. Tilla is also pushing around and doesn't dare to talk about her feelings. And so she chooses the indirect way: As part of a dictation that Ulrich takes down, she confesses her love to him. But her secretary does not understand that the text read is meant for him, and when he asks, "Who should this letter be addressed to?", Tilla finds it disappointing. The chance for a common future is wasted in this second and both go their own way. Resignedly, Tilla finally marries the wealthy and intellectually poor factory owner Jerome Tönli.

The song is from was created from August 15 to September 13, 1930 in the UFA Ateliers in Berlin-Tempelhof . The censorship occupied the six-stroke with a length of 2794 meters with a youth ban.
