action

René Lambertin ( Jan Kiepura ) is an unemployed tenor . The young soprano Denise Vernier falls in love with him and wants to help him. She uses the champagne maker Octave de Croisson to give René's career a boost. Croisson is in love with Denise and fulfills her every wish. He speaks to the opera director Delumat, and René actually gets the lead in Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème . Denise sings the main female part. In reality, her role fate suddenly becomes her own and she becomes ill with tuberculosis . The young couple's happiness seems to have melted away. Denise leaves René so as not to burden him with her imminent death. She makes him believe that she is living with Croisson. René only realizes how much Denise loves him during the opera premiere of La Bohème . But it is too late. Denise dies of the same illness as the character to be portrayed during the performance.

background

In addition to arias by Giacomo Puccini from La Bohème , this film features two songs that Robert Stolz and Ernst Marischka wrote especially for the film: I love you! and don't cry, a beautiful woman breaks your heart

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : humorous relaxed music film with the dream couple Eggerth and Kiepura, which merges stage events and reality in a less credible, very emotional way.
