World premieres
- January 12th : The film Der Hund von Baskerville starts in two Berlin cinemas - it is the first German sound film about Sherlock Holmes .
- January 19 : The film Truxa by Hans H. Zerlett has its world premiere at the Alhambra in Berlin. The film makes the leading actress La Jana known all over Germany in one fell swoop.
- January 29th : Sidney Franklin's film The Good Earth, based on the novel by Pearl S. Buck, is released.
- March 25th : The German feature film Die Gläserne Kugel has its world premiere in Munich.
- April 16 : The Western Comedy Way Out West of Laurel and Hardy has its premiere in the United States. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy later call the work their favorite film. In 1938 he received an Oscar nomination for best film music.
- May 7th : The dance musical Shall We Dance with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire appears. It is the seventh film they have made together. Directed by Mark Sandrich , while the music was contributed by the songwriting duo George and Ira Gershwin .
- May 11 : The adventure film Captains Courageous ( Manuel ), starring Freddie Bartholomew and Spencer Tracy, based on a story by Rudyard Kipling , premieres in the United States.
- May 17 : Allan Dwan begins shooting the US feature film Heidi, freely based on the novel by Johanna Spyri with Shirley Temple in the title role. The shooting will end in July, the world premiere will take place on October 15th .
- September 4th : The actress Miriam Hopkins marries the director Anatole Litvak .
- October 27th : La mujer de nadie by Adela Sequeyro with cinematographer Alex Phillips , premiered in Mexico City, is the first Mexican film to be directed by a woman.
- October 29th : Ernst Lubitsch's film Angel with Marlene Dietrich has its world premiere.
- November: Alfred Hitchcock's early work Young and Innocent appears.
- December 21 : Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , Walt Disney's first full-length cartoon , premieres in Hollywood.
- With the film Think Fast, Mr. Moto ( Mr. Moto and the smugglers' gang ), the main actor Peter Lorre becomes known to a wider audience. Another film in the series Thank You, Mr. Moto ( Mr. Moto and the China Treasure ), based on the character of the Japanese secret agent Mr. Moto , created by John Phillips Marquand , follows in the same year .
