Ned Thomas Beatty (born July 6, 1937 in Louisville , Kentucky - † June 13, 2021 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor who appeared in over 200 films . His best-known roles include Lex Luther's henchman Otis in the comic adaptation Superman (1978) and Bobby Trippe in his debut film When Everyone Is Dying (1972).

Life

Early life and career beginnings

Beatty was the son of Margaret Fortney Beatty, née Lennis, and Charles William Beatty. He had a sister, Mary Margaret Beatty Gwinner. Beatty was brought up religiously and began to sing in gospel choirs, in the church choir of St. Matthews Church, but also in his local church in 1947 and earned money to feed his family. At the age of 19 he had his first appearance at the theater in the play Wilderness Road .

Beatty studied music at Transylvania University in Lexington , Kentucky, but never graduated. He later performed at the Clarksville Little Theater and the Actors Theater in Louisville. He made his most famous stage actor appearance on Broadway in 1966 as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman . When Beatty played there in Howard Sackler's play The Great White Hope , the director John Boorman saw him and then won him for the film Everyone is First to Die .

With his prominent role in Everyone's First To Die , Beatty's career began as an actor in well over 200 films. Beatty was very popular with the audience and had a high recognition factor due to his external appearance. In most of his film appearances he played supporting roles, for example as a fat, sweating policeman or as an unpredictable gangster. In 1976, Beatty played the chief of the television station in the film satire network , where the main character lived out her anger in the live broadcasts. Ten years later, Beatty was the leader of a group of corrupt cops in The Big Easy . In the award-winning British film Hear My Song from 1991, he portrayed the singer Josef Locke and thus deviated completely from his previous role model. In addition to cinema roles, he also worked regularly on television series, for example in the crime series Homicide between 1993 and 1995 . He took on speaking roles in the animated films Toy Story 3 (2010) and Rango (2011). He played his last film role in 2013 in the romantic comedy Love in the luggage , directed by David E. Talbert .

Private

Beatty's first wife was Walta Addott, and after divorcing her, he married actress Belinda Rowley in 1971 , whom he met while filming Everyone's First To Die . On June 28, 1979, he married Dorothy (called Tinker) Adams Lindsay, from whom he divorced in 1998. Since November 20, 1999, he was married to Sandra Johnsen. Beatty had eight children from his first three marriages. He was not related to either the actor Warren Beatty or the comic book writer Scott Beatty .

Beatty suffered from a manic-depressive illness , from which he was cured, but had repeated relapses of depression. In 2006 he started singing again and recorded the CD In the Beginning Was the Word .

Beatty died of natural causes in Los Angeles in June 2021, aged 83.

Awards

Beatty was nominated for an Academy Award for Network , he also received two nominations for an Emmy Award and one for a Golden Globe Award .
