action

At a party, the publishing employee Peter Hoskins meets the bartender Rita Boyle, who dreams of a career as a graphic designer. She asks him to dance. Rita and Peter spend a night together and start a relationship.

One day, Rita agrees to realize one of Peter's fancy dreams. She also learns a few sentences in Dutch from Peter. Rita reveals to Peter that she doesn't want to have children because it would be unfair to the children to raise them in a terrible world. After a few weeks, Rita and Peter move in together. It turns out that she suffers from insomnia.

Rita and Peter get married. Rita kisses an old man during the wedding, with whom she then swaps bodies. When the couple flies to Jamaica on their honeymoon , Rita sleeps on the plane. Peter notices that his supposed wife does not know many details that Rita knew. He says she is not herself. After returning he finds the old man, in whose body Rita's spirit lives. He learns from his family that the man is terminally ill and can only live for a short time.

When Peter tries to confront the spirit of the man in Rita's body, she leaves him and moves in with her parents. They think Peter is crazy when he points out the changes in Rita's behavior. The family goes away, meanwhile the old man with the ghost of Rita lives with Peter.

After Rita's return, Peter lures her into his apartment. He and the old man tie her up and force her to kiss again. Only when Rita and the old man talk about their wishes do the ghosts of Rita and the old man return to their own bodies.

The film could inspire long discussions about the meaning of life. Ebert praised the portrayals of Alec Baldwin, Meg Ryan and Sydney Walker, a stage actor who played " wonderfully " in the film .

The lexicon of international films criticized the " unnecessary skirmishes " and the low number of punch lines. The film is " half-baked ", the " dramaturgical sense " would be missing.
