Meg Ryan (* 19th November 1961 in Fairfield , Connecticut as Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra ) is an US-American actress that counted, especially in the 1990s, the most popular film actresses.

Personal

Meg Ryan is the daughter of Harry Hyra and Susan Jordan, b. Duggan. For the first few years of her childhood, Ryan, who was just called "Peggy" by everyone, lived with her parents and siblings Dana, Andrew and Annie in their birthplace, Fairfield, Connecticut. In 1974 the family moved to nearby Bethel . Ryan's father taught math in a high school and her mother was a housewife while they were married. After their parents separated in 1976, Ryan grew up with her father. In 1979 Ryan graduated from Bethel High School.

Ryan married actor Dennis Quaid in 1991 , with whom she had previously appeared in two films. They have a son, Jack Quaid . After an affair with Russell Crowe , the marriage was divorced on July 16, 2001. On January 25, 2006, she adopted a Chinese girl. Meg Ryan has had an on-off relationship with singer John Mellencamp since 2010, and became engaged to him in November 2018.

Career

Ryan studied journalism at the University of Connecticut and later communication studies at New York University . Her mother, who now worked as an acting teacher, gave Ryan appearances in television commercials that helped her to finance her studies. After being inducted into the Screen Actors Guild , she decided to go on to perform under the stage name Meg Ryan. Meg Ryan got her first film role in 1981 in The Wild Realms . From 1982 to 1984 she played the role of Betsy Stewart Montgomery Andropoulos in the daily soap Young and Passionate - As Life Plays .

After several television and small cinema films, she achieved her first major successes in 1986 with Top Gun - They fear neither death nor the devil, and in 1989 with the lead role in the comedy Harry and Sally . Harry and Sally became the prototype of numerous romantic comedies that have since been produced - including internationally - and set the actress on the role of the charming and romantic woman. With French Kiss (1995) at the latest , her career had reached its zenith . Two of the three films starring Tom Hanks also contributed to their great popularity : Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and em @ il for you (1998). In 1997 she was the voice of Anastasia in the film of the same name, Anastasia , an American cartoon about the Russian imperial Romanov family .

Ryan tried to expand her role spectrum with dramatic roles in films like When a Man Loves a Woman - here she played an alcoholic mother. In Love , she portrayed a vengeful ex-lover, and in Daring to Truth , she had a supporting role as a captain in the US Army. These films, which were more ambitious in terms of content, were mostly judged negatively by the film critics or hardly noticed by the audience (like the later film The Promoter from 2004).

Through her globally successful comedies and romance films, Ryan was one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood until the late 1990s and was also one of the highest-paid actresses in the world with salaries of up to $ 15 million.

However, this successful phase ended abruptly after 1998. From the 2000s, Ryan could no longer build on their previous successes. Their appearance has changed noticeably since around 2000, which is often attributed in the media to unsuccessful cosmetic surgery. In 2003 she took on a role in the erotic thriller In the Cut - When love kills , in which the actress was also seen in longer nude scenes. This, as well as Ryan's other films, found little response from the audience. In 2015 she made her directorial debut with Ithaca , a film adaptation of a novel, and at the same time took on a leading role.
