action
San Francisco - Former United States Navy aviator Lieutenant Tuck Pendleton, a notorious drinker and womanizer, is in a difficult situation professionally and personally. He has lost his job, his friend Lydia Maxwell (a journalist) leaves him, and in order to earn a living he is forced to take a risky job as a test subject.
A research laboratory tests an experimental microchip. With the help of this component, Tuck is to be reduced in size together with a mini submarine and injected into the body of a rabbit . During the experiment , however, the laboratory is attacked by the henchmen of a criminal competitor who steal the chip. In the general hustle and bustle, Pendleton accidentally ends up in the body of the fidgety and hypochondriacal supermarket cashier Jack Putter.
Since he is slowly running out of oxygen, Pendleton only has one chance: he uses his on-board technology to contact a putter and induces him to do something to save himself. Equipped with Tuck in his bloodstream and Lydia at his side, the chaotic clumsy fights his way through the adventure of his life to get the chip back, enlarge Tuck again, eliminate the opponents around the gangster Victor Scrimshaw and the slick high-tech dealer "Cowboy" doing business with Victor to put down the trade.
After his rescue, Tuck and Lydia marry, who is expecting a child from him. The film ends with another attack by the gangsters and putter, who takes up the chase.
Further information
- The 1966 film Die phantastische Reise by Richard Fleischer is considered to be the predecessor of Die Reise ins Ich . Director Joe Dante didn’t just shoot a remake, but instead turned the plot into a comical way and gave it the technical touch to match the modern age.
- The cameraman in The Fantastic Journey was Ernest Laszlo , the father of the cameraman Andrew Laszlo who works here .
- The idea of letting shrink people wander through a human body was also used in the 1997 film Chasing the Kidney Stone by Vibeke Idsøe .
- For his shoot, director Joe Dante used a staff of actors with whom he shoots over and over again. These include Robert Picardo , Kathleen Freeman , Dick Miller and Henry Gibson . With them he turned u. a. the Gremlins films and The Beast .
- The two actors with whom Martin Short can be seen in the waiting room scene are Andrea Martin and Joe Flaherty , his partners from the SCTV Channel series .
- The scene in the mall was filmed in two different shopping malls in Los Angeles . The shot of Ozzie walking in and walking to the elevator was filmed in Northridge Mall. When he gets to the top and Jack puts the syringe in the ass, the Sherman Oaks Galleria can be seen.
- Director Joe Dante's trademark is the use of two nuns in each of his films. In Innerspace they can be seen at the mall. He himself has a cameo in the film . He is the first laboratory technician to be led by Dr. Cankers' people is attacked.
- The scenes with the downsized people were filmed on the one hand with children, on the other hand with the actors acting in oversized backdrops. The oversized backdrops were shot from a distance and combined with normal sized actors and performers. This saved duplicate recordings and costs. This can be seen in the scuffle in the Volvo between Lydia and Jack and between Scrimshaw and Dr. Canker. In a final shot, the actors are in an oversized suitcase that is closed by a normal-sized hand.
- In the scene after Jack has visually transformed into a cowboy thanks to Tuck's help, cowboy actor Robert Picardo had to prove his timing and speed. This scene was shot in one take and without a cut, whereby Picardo initially works with Jack's outfit and hair and at the end lies tied up, naked and numb in the bathtub. Picardo goes out of the picture at the beginning, slips behind the camera and there from his clothes and into the bathtub. At the end the other hair was put on him through a flap in the wall above the tub.
- As Tuck is zoomed out, the screens show a pictogram made up of five interwoven hexagons. This is the symbol of the Combined Miniature Deterrent Forces or CMDF, an organization from The Fantastic Journey .
- Actors Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan met and fell in love while the film was being made, were married from 1991 to 2001 and have a son, Jack Quaid .
criticism
“Fast-paced, comedic science fiction fairy tale with parodic elements that strings together a multitude of film quotes. It primarily gets its witticism from the description of the unusual 'male friendship'. "
"Turbulent, funny and deeply 'human'."
