Robert Picardo (born October 27, 1953 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American actor , best known for his roles as a medical holographic emergency program in the Star Trek universe and as Richard Woolsey in the Stargate series.

Life

After high school, he began graduate studies in medicine , but switched to acting and received his bachelor's degree in acting from Yale University in 1974 . He has been married since 1984 and has two daughters. He filed for divorce in mid-July 2012.

Career

Early roles

His debut had Picardo 1975 in the short film Double Talk , of the Academy Awards 1976 as Best Short Film was nominated. Appearances in various films and television series followed , including Das Tier und Kojak . He also played alongside Danny Aiello on Broadway from 1977 .

In the early 1980s he was seen recurring in the sitcom Imbiss mit Bite . In the 1985 film Explorers, directed by Joe Dante , he appeared in three roles, as Commander Starkiller , the alien youth Wak and his father.

In the series Wonderful Years he was seen repeatedly as Coach Cutlip , which in 1989 earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Picardo had a first leading role in a television series from 1988 in the Golden Globe- winning Vietnam War hospital series China Beach as chief surgeon and womanizer Dick Richard . He himself received a 1991 Viewers for Quality Television award for his role.

Picardo was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Gremlins 2 - The Return of the Little Monsters . Other roles, especially in TV series such as Listen, Who Is Hammering or Emergency Room , followed.

The doctor

Picardo had his final and above all international breakthrough in the role of the initially nameless doctor from Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager . As a "medical holographic emergency program" (MHN) it was also seen in the movie Star Trek: The First Contact . In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , he made a guest appearance as Dr. Lewis Zimmerman , the developer of the holographic doctor. In the same episode, Picardo also played an EMH. For his portrayal in Voyager , he received another nomination for the Saturn Award in 2000 , this time for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series. Further career

After completing the Stargate series, other guest roles followed in various television series. In an episode of the first season of the series Justified , which was acclaimed for his character drawing , he played an art collector who collects pictures of Hitler in order to conclude with his father's work for the Nazis. In 2012 he played again in Body of Proof alongside his former China Beach colleague Dana Delany and Jeri Ryan . Since 2015 he has been a member of the board of the Planetary Society , a non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to researching the solar system.

In the meantime Picardo had a few guest roles in series such as Ally McBeal , Frasier or Seven Days .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Dubbing voice

Since Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager , his standard German voice comes from Stefan Staudinger .
