Divorced firefighter Chris Meher has to leave his daughter Lindsey alone on their day off because a meteor shower the night before caused numerous fires. Scientist Dr. Gordon meanwhile informs the US military that an asteroid the size of a quarter of the moon is approaching Earth. The asteroid will collide with Earth in less than 48 hours, wiping out all life. The military decides to start a space mission to destroy the asteroid using explosive devices. The mission is to be led by Captain James Wheeler, who has been considered unstable for two years, as he lost one of his men on an assignment. Only the announcement that all humanity will die without his help finally lets him lead the mission. Dr. Gordon part.

With the help of a modern shuttle, the group reached the asteroid, but discovered in a cave that it was not an asteroid, but the mother ship of aliens. James gives orders to set the people free. The group invades the alien fortress, is attacked by aliens and decimated. James wakes up a short time later and witnesses how Sgt. Clayton is brutally murdered by an alien. He sees Dr. Trapped in a cage, Gordon is unable to free her. An alien brings James to the Alien Queen and James learns that she is the last queen of the alien race that will become extinct. Therefore, the aliens go to different planets and “harvest” the inhabitants there in order to continue to live. James can share his knowledge with Dr. Gordon pass on, but she is killed shortly afterwards. After all, James is the only survivor of his group. He manages to get to the radio transmitter and broadcast his knowledge of the aliens to earth before he too is killed.

On earth, soldiers are preparing to save humanity based on James' report. Two teams are formed: One is to be teleported to the alien planet and free the people trapped there and bring them back to earth. A second team is to destroy the asteroid that serves as the portal from the alien planet to Earth. The asteroid is successfully hit with an atomic bomb, but only the outer shell flakes off and exposes the mother ship. Chris and the other group liberate some people, but gradually all members of the group are killed. Chris manages to find Lindsey, who is injured. He escapes with her from the alien fortress, only to find himself surrounded by hundreds of aliens a few meters away. While Lindsey asks him to give up, since it is all over anyway, Chris faces the aliens armed only with a fire ax.
